Evening for Outstanding Students

By Ilana Simon

The University of Winnipeg hosted more than 800 high-achieving Grade 11 and 12 students and their parents at the annual Evening for Outstanding Students held October 24, 2006.

"The University of Winnipeg offers a caring environment and small classes that allowed me to make friends and get to know my professors," Erika Bock, B.Sc. 4-year '05 and currently a 2nd year Medical School student, told the students. "My profs always had time for me and wanted me to succeed. The University of Winnipeg prepared me well to take on new challenges and I was truly valued as a student here."

Registrar Colin Russell noted that students can expect from UWinnipeg a "commitment to a high quality education, excellent professors, an opportunity to engage in ongoing and innovative research, and supports to assist them in their pursuit of academic excellence."

High school students from across Manitoba, with a grade point average above 80 per cent, were invited to the University to learn about the registration and admission process, check out the University's wide range of academic programs, and generous scholarship and bursary awards program. Nancy Latocki, Director of Admissions, advised students to register by the March 1, 2007 deadline.

Professors from each department were on hand to answer questions and provide information about their specific programs. Participants visited displays highlighting UWinnipeg's academic departments, programs, and services.
