Describe your project.

Modeled after Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) initiatives, the Free Library of Philadelphia Cultureshare will deliver staff curated, digital content to Free Library patron subscribers on a monthly basis. Selections could include e-books, music streams, podcasts, film, and highlights from Free Library special collections as well as locally sourced, original content created by Philadelphians working in the arts and humanities.

How does this project advance the library field?

The Free Library of Philadelphia Cultureshare is a highly creative and different means of delivering information to our community of users. While our organization is rich in arts and humanities content, much of this lives in digital corners or vaulted away in physical form, accessible only to the web savvy or in-person visitors. By developing a subscription based, digital “share” of arts and humanities selections, we hope to inspire users, encourage greater cultural engagement, and connect the public with e-materials and highlights from our collection.

Who is the audience and what are their information needs?

Any and all Free Library of Philadelphia cardholders looking to be inspired, enlightened, and devoted to lifelong learning. The Cultureshare is also an opportunity to reach a population of Philadelphians who are patrons of the arts and humanities though may not yet immediately think of the Library as a hub of cultural programming and services. Additionally, we are seeing a shift in how individuals use the Library–virtual visits continue to rise while in-person traffic remains flat or in slow decline. Free Library Cultureshare looks to support the needs of information transfer in a digital world, reach existing patrons and new audiences through a free, subscription-based platform, and continue to engage the public in innovative and exciting ways.
