Physical Activity & Nutrition Resources for the Military Community
Resource / President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition

Did you know concerns about the lacking physical fitness of military draftees was a contributing factor to the formation of what is known today as the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition? It’s true!

These concerns and numerous published research articles in the mid-1950s detailing striking results about the poor state of youth fitness in America and relative to their European counterparts sounded an alarm. It was the subject of the June 1956 President’s Conference on Fitness of American at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. One month later, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued Executive Order 10673 creating the President’s Council on Youth Fitness at the cabinet-level. The Council was to be a facilitator and promoter to enhance the fitness of American youth and focused on creating public awareness and programs.

Sixty years later, our concern is not only for the physical fitness of military recruits, but for the overall health and wellness of the entire military community. The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition’s website features a collection of resources for service members, veterans, and their families to receive information on programs related to physical activity and nutrition.
