Go from Zero to Sixty During the #0to60 Challenge

Last month, for National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, we encouraged you to #MoveInMay and beyond. Now, the time to go above and beyond is here! The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition and the National Fitness Foundation want to see you continue your journey of fun, active and healthy living. For June we’re excited to help you accelerate your healthiest life by kicking things up a notch with the new #0to60 Challenge. For the next 60 days we’re committed to showing countless ways to continue your journey from zero to sixty.

The #0to60 Challenge is a 60-day challenge with fun and engaging resources, daily tips and partner resources to help guide and motivate your journey to a healthier you. To help you rise to the Challenge, we have created a number of tools that can assist you along your journey:

The challenge also allows you to track your progress using the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s SuperTracker platform and helps you earn a Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+).  The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+) will help guide you from #0to60 during this Challenge. Sign up for our 8-week program at any time on SuperTracker or by using the paper log available at Fitness.gov. Track your daily food and physical activity to reach the program goals and earn your award!

#MoveInMay for National Physical Fitness and Sports Month!

Each year, the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition encourages all Americans to #MoveInMay. Why? Because it’s National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and what better time to focus on being active and becoming a healthier you!

What’s your favorite activity or sport? Mine is racquetball. Old school, right? Well it’s a fun and exciting way to be active. I started at age 6, and I plan to play until I’m at least 86. Is there an activity you’d like to try or gym shoes you’d like to dust off? Go for it and share your move with us on Twitter @FitnessGov using #MoveInMay!

Remember, you don’t have to be an elite athlete to be fit. It doesn’t matter where you are on your journey or how you ended up here. You can make healthier choices starting today, so what are you waiting for? Get up, get out and #MoveInMay! If you still need a little extra motivation, we have several programs to help you get moving today and every day:

Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+):
The Council's Presidential Active Lifestyle Award, also called PALA+, is a free, eight-week program that can help jumpstart your journey to a healthy lifestyle. PALA+ promotes individualized physical activity and healthy eating goals based on the latest recommendations from the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Millions of Americans have completed PALA+, but for the first time ever, the President’s Council has joined forces with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help you track your healthy eating and physical activities using the SuperTracker online tool. Participants who complete the program goals can receive the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award.

Presidential Champions:
If you are looking for a program to make regular physical activity part of your daily life for the long-term, the Presidential Champions program is for you! Presidential Champions is for anyone who is consistently active, or who is looking to take the next step in their journey after completing PALA+. By logging your activities using SuperTracker, you will earn points toward the bronze, silver, gold, and eventually the platinum award!

I Can Do It, You Can Do It!:
The I Can Do It, You Can Do It! (ICDI) program facilitates opportunities for all Americans, regardless of ability, to lead a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition. This program is for children and adults with disabilities, and includes resources to keep participants engaged in leading a healthy lifestyle. It also offers recognition for program completion through PALA+. 

Throughout National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, the President’s Council will also highlight other health and fitness- related observances celebrated in May. We want to make sure you have plenty of opportunities to #MoveInMay and every day! So be on the lookout for information on National Physical Education & Sport Week (May 1-7); National Bike to School Day (May 10); National Women’s Health Week (May 14-20); the anniversary of the Council’s I Can Do It, You Can Do It program (May 21); and Senior Health & Fitness Day (May 31).

Blog: Health, the future, and that guy with the tacos.

That guy in the cool uniform making tacos is Vivek Murthy.

If you don’t know Vivek, it so happens he’s the Surgeon General of the United States, and he has some strong thoughts about food. “What demands attention,” he says unequivocally, “is a fundamental building block of health that many are lacking: food.”

In his mind, good food matters as much to health as new medications, new technologies, expanded insurance or improved quality of care.

“As a physician, I have seen the consequences of hunger,” he said. “I see the price of hunger as surgeon general, too.”

That price includes diabetes, heart disease, obesity, emotional challenges, and stress that spawns other health issues.

So there was Vivek making tacos in the food bank this afternoon, celebrating cooking, wellness, and the 60th anniversary of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition at today’s Family Food Fest event. He was high-fiving children, and asking about each kid’s favorite fruit.

Cindy said her favorite fruit was the kumquat, to which he replied: “If you like exotic fruits, try a jackfruit.”

She agreed to give it a taste test.

The surgeon general and the President’s Council chose the food bank as a venue because both have concluded the same thing we have: that food is at the heart of health and fitness.

After hearing about our work with recipes and nutrition education, someone on the surgeon general’s staff turned to me and said, “I didn’t realize the food bank was a public health organization.”

And with that comment, our mission came into sharp focus: we provide food to those who need it, absolutely. And we will continue to do so as long as the need exists. But food banks of the 21st century must also transform ourselves into public health organizations, and the Capital Area Food Bank is fast on that path. We are:

Supplying the community with millions of pounds of fruits and vegetables each year – over a third of of the 46 million pounds of food we send out.

Pairing our produce with recipes and produce guides so that those who receive them are empowered to understand them and prepare them.

Working closely with our retail partners, like Giant, Shoppers, and others to continuously winnow down the sugar and salt in the food we receive and distribute.

Creating robust and creative partnerships of all kinds with other health-centric organizations, like our partnership with the American Heart Association to bring blood pressure test equipment and information about heart healthy food to our network of food pantries.

This transformation – from food bank to public health organization – is our work, no less important than loading a forklift with food, or getting our fleet of trucks out into the community each day. It drives our thinking and our actions.

As a society, we have become increasingly aware that, as former AOL CEO Steve Case said, “health begins at the end of a fork”. Our future begins on our plates, and at the Capital Area Food Bank, we’re building a stronger future each day. And we’re glad to have that guy in the cool uniform joining us as we do.

Food Bank, President’s Council, and Area Chefs Help Local Families Cook their Way to Better Health

WASHINGTON, DC, March 16 – The Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) is hosting the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition’s (PCFSN) #0to60 Family Food Fest, bringing together DC-area families to learn healthy cooking techniques from local professional chefs. Shannon Feaster, Deputy Executive Director of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, will kick off the event in celebration of National Nutrition Month and PCFSN’s 60th anniversary. The Surgeon General of the United States Vice Admiral Vivek Murthy, will also be a special guest at the event and will assist the families with prepping healthy meals.

Family Food Fest families, some of whom participate in the CAFB’s free monthly school-based market program known as Family Markets, will chop, slice and peel under the direction of Chef Ryan Ratino of Ripple; Chef Morou Outtara of Kora; Chef Jerome Grant of Sweet Home Café at the National Museum of African American History & Culture; Chef Daniel Thomas; and the food bank’s own in-house nutritionist Jodi Balis. And to the sounds of 15 year old DJ Beauty and the Beatz, they’ll learn new, inexpensive, and healthy ways to prepare the foods they often receive from the monthly markets.

“Cooking isn’t just a skill – it’s a powerful tool for keeping families healthy,” said Nancy E. Roman, President and CEO of the Capital Area Food Bank. “Providing the building blocks for wellness by creating access to good food and information about how to use it is something we couldn’t be more committed to.”

Today, PCFSN is also announcing updates to their Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+) program that promotes physical activity and good nutrition, and recognizes Americans for establishing healthy habits with a free award. As part of a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP), PALA+ is incorporated into USDA’s free online food and activity tracking tool, SuperTracker. For the first time, program participants will have the ability to log individual food items and physical activities on their SuperTracker profile to achieve the program’s goals. Participation in PALA+ is one way for individuals ages 6 and up to move towards the recommendations in the latest Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
