Medical student wins Empire State run-up

Volume 7 Number 2 February 14 - March 13 2011

The 2011 Empire State Building Run Up women’s race crowned a new champion, Alice McNamara of Australia and the University of Melbourne.

An accomplished rower who is a gold medallist at two world championships, Ms McNamara is no stranger to stair training, though this was her first race. “I used my arms a lot, and I watched last year’s race on YouTube – so I was prepared for the mad dash at the start,” she told the website of the event organiser, the New York Road Runners, after her victory. “I’ve run a marathon and rowed in championship races, but this was the hardest thing I’ve ever done!” Alice McNamara, has degrees from Melbourne in Science and Commerce and is now in the first intake for the graduate Doctor of Medicine (MD).
