Yamaha Road Star Pistons

Complete Documentation of a Big Bore Project!

Today we are releasing a new series of articles on the Clinic that document a complete engine tear down and reassembly. Randy Fox (associate Publisher here at the Clinic) decided to go big bore on his Road Star and documented the process from start to finish. This is an incredible addition to our Tech Tips library, with a total of nineteen articles from start to finish.

In order to make it easy to follow, and to keep the structure easy to navigate, we have created a new category under our "Engine" section in our Tech Tips called "Engine Tear Down and Reassembly Series". As is usually the case with Randy's Tech Tip articles, each is well thought out, easy to read, and easy to understand. Randy has taken the time to create an index for the whole series that briefly explains what each article is about, and the order they should read. This series is a must read for any Road Star rider who likes to maintain their own bike.

About this series:

  • The first public articles we have seen documenting the complete process, with pics!
  • Over 110 detailed photos, most with embedded description pointers.
  • Nearly 100 pages of information.
  • This is not a re-write of the service manual. It is a companion piece--to be used side-by-side. The service manual is not meant to describe HOW or WHY. This series addresses these, and more.
  • Randy has spent more than 300 hours creating this series.
  • Special tips, warnings, and notes are sprinkled throughout from Randy's own experience in his Big Bore project (and tips from his mentors).
  • This is first hand experience gained with a Road Star rider who uses his bike as a daily commuter.

The series is structured to make the best use of your time. You can read it start-to-finish, or you can skip around to those 'chapters' (segments, documents, articles) that address your specific needs of the moment. If you'd like to see what's inside the transfer case because your front pulley is acting funny, you can go right to that information (pictorial and textual). If you're considering adjustable pushrods, to quite the engine's top-end chatter, you can easily go right to that section.

This kicks off a renewed commitment to the mission of the Road Star Clinic, centered around our Tech Articles and Tips. We plan to roll out several series of related articles on topics like: basic maintenance, most popular upgrades, simpler modifications you can do yourself, preparing for longer distance rides, and considerations for more aggressive modifications (we all like the custom stuff).
