Introduction

Crankcase, right, empty, Yamaha Road Star

There can be many reasons for tearing your engine completely apart:

  • Installing a big-bore kit that requires machining of the crankcase
  • Repairing the transmission, crank, or other major component
  • Replacing main-bearings, or other internal bearings as part of a complete overhaul
  • Welding on the crankcase because of accidental damage
  • Dropping a small part down into the engine by mistake. Yeow!

What was my reason? I did a big bore project. As is my habit, I kept detailed notes, took pictures, and along the way I talked to a lot of folks much more experienced than I.
