Drill the Stock Exhaust (stage 1, 2, 3) 10 Years, 4 Months ago
This thread discusses the Content article: Drill the Stock Exhaust (stage 1, 2, 3)

Doc, Muskey,anyone
Is it really necessary to remove the mufflers to do a stage 1 on a
06 Silverado? What would be the drawback of leaving them on to do
this? I realize that you would have to remove the metal chips but
a good shopvac should do the trick. Also I have a good M.C. jack so the
height should not be a problem.
Thanks
Denny

I've read posts by quite a few people who left the pipes on. I think as long as you don't use Gorilla tools you should be OK.

What Musky said. I believe we just barely had a couple of guys who did a Stage 1 still attached to the bike. I would've done it too if I hadn't bought the Khrome Werks.

Thanks, I couldn't think why anyone would want to make
more work for themselves by taking them off

If you put your bike on a lift, then I would recommend having someone hold the bike while you are removing the cone, especially if you use a hole saw because a lot of torque is applied. Better safe than sorry IMHO.

Once the cone is out, then drilling the 1/2" holes is easy because the plate is very thin (maybe 1/8&quot. I drilled a starter hole and then went straight to the 1/2" drill bit.

Once the cone is out, HOW deep is the next step for drilling. What length drill do I need ????

Well I finally went to stage 3 after a week of stage 1. Let me clarify something to make it easier on everyone. The 8 holes that you drill in stage 1, if you take a center punch and punch between them and then use the same bit in between them you can seperate the center pipe from the outer pipe. Now the instructions are vague on what to put in the center pipe to get it out. I'll tell you the easiest way, Get two crowbars. the smaller kind about like 4 feet long. Put one in the pipe and wiggle the hell out of it for like 5 mins. Then shove it in there and twist by hand till it fouls in the pipe. Use the other bar as a cheater bar to turn it. The pipe will come right out. Piece of cake. Then use a straight die grinder to smooth up the burred edges in the end of your pipe and spray with the paint. Also there is absolutely NO need to rejet on this stage 3 mod. My bike is an 07 silverado with stock air box and no other mods and runs as good or better than before I pulled the pipe. It didnt get sluggish, or flood, or anything. It just sounded mean. If you're thinking about stage 3 you can do it in less than 1 hour with a drill, a drill bit, 2 crowbars, a die grinder or comparable tool, and some black grill paint. And you'll be glad you did. Thanks to this site for the help. Someone should clarify what to put in the pipe in the tech tips section. Would eliminate some questions. Thanks again.

Additionally: I did stage 3 with the pipes on the bike. Just watch your chrome and paint with the crowbar lol

It is approx. 2-1/4" from the end of the exhaust to the front of the plate. The plate itself is very thin (maybe 1/8"-thick).
