I have a question? What will my FI run with the new Open K&N Filter and the Freedom Dualies. Will it run lean or rich?

That combination seems to work great on all the FI bikes without any mods to the ECU. I have read many post on fuel controllers and just about everyone that has bought one has taken it back off. Only other thing you need to do is to remove the AIS if you haven't already done so.

This is a copy /paste from Rivers post on AFR readings on a FI bike.

Inovate A/FR Monitor 3 Years ago
Some of you guys and gals might remember I put on an Inovate wide band A/F Monitor.
Today is the first day I really got to check out the fuel injection good with the monitor.

I rode a hundred miles down the freeway at about 80 mph and the monitor showed the fuel trim on the computer actually working.

The numbers reading at 80 would cycle from 14.2 to 14.7 repeatedly. The AIS and the original mufflers are gone, I am running Samson Big Guns with homemade baffles, the air box is a round K&N.

The averaging light stays between 14.6 and 14.7 just like it was designed to do with the fuel trim and that is too constantly try to balance the fuel feed so that it averages 14.7.

Sooo...if you have fuel injection and want to change this stuff, it don't change a thing with the fuel balance.

I think Yamaha would have been better to use wideband o2 sensors, but the narrow band sensors with the computer does the job.

Also, on acceleration the readings drop as it should for plenty of power and performance for a cruiser.

The bike seems to just reach cruising speed at 80 and thats where she wants to run.

Re:Fuel Injection Facts and Tips 2 Years, 10 Months ago
So, this is kind of a response to this topic and another one recently made. I know there is a way to adjust CO levels at idle. I wouldn't mind getting an AFR moniter for my bike and seeing if the stock system can handle the performance throttle body and intake. I know it has been suggested that the bike would need larger fuel injectors. When I installed the throttle body and intake manifold on my bike, it seemed to run fine at cruising speed, was just stumbling off idle. I would really like to see what the AFR is at cruise and at a WOT run down the expressway. If the numbers are still good, then the stock injectors are fine, IMO. Would just have to adjust that idle level to make it more street friendly. No aftermarket fuel controller needed. Any expert opinions on this?

Only reason I haven't done this yet is I've already wasted too much money on fiddling with the FI system with no results Kinda pisses me off that we seem to have a pretty crappy system when compared to any other bike I've ever heard of. Harley's, any sportbike I've ever heard of, etc. They are all capable of being tuned properly with a Powerommander. Sure it runs fine, but it's not tuneable to make more power (you know me and my opinion on the power of the Roadstar, or, the lack thereof )

Looks like they are about $160. Plus, I would need to find someone who is good enough to weld in the bung. So, not terrible. But, then I would have to figure out how to adjust the idle mixture. One of the guys on here has talked about it (scottw comes to mind I think). Would be a bunch of work to change everything again, but would be worth it if I could make it work

If you still have your PC5 why couldn't you use it and create a custom map using the AFR gauge?

I never had the PCV for the Roadstar. Picked up one of the Cobra ones for pretty cheap. Didn't change anything at all. I've got the PCV on my R1

Also, I'd be willing to bet that the stock computer can handle everything. Just need to adjust that idle mixture. But, that's just a guess

The CO adjustment is only there to make sure the cylinders are equal at idle. Not something you can do yourself without an EGA that can be hooked into the stock ports in the head pipes.

The larger speedstar manifold originally had to be paired with the larger speedstar injectors. The reason being that the pulse width range of the stock injectors wasn't enough for the increased air intake. It's possible that the stock injectors could be made to work by somehow increasing the available pressure. I'm not aware of anyone who offers a different pressure regulator. At closed loop cruise the stock system can probably handle things because the airflow won't be any different. It's during acceleration when the pulse width is hardwired according to throttle position that the increased airflow will cause a lean condition.

The difference in the speedstar injectors was that they delivered more fuel at a given pulse width than the stock injectors.

As I have stated before, and this is from the Yamaha FI manual, if the volumetric efficiency of the engine is changed the fuel delivery during open loop will remain the same.

That makes sense. So, it sounds like a power commander is the only way to make it right, along with the proper fuel injectors. Since the speedstar injectors are no longer available, I wonder if something that will work is available at an auto parts store or whatever. Would have to know the exact specs on the Speedstar injectors I suppose. It doesn't seem worth it with all the problems that come along with a power commander though, even if you could find the right injectors.

Many times I wish I would've bought a used 06-07 instead of a new FI bike. This FI system is probably the worst FI system I have ever dealt with.
