Would the archive include photos that are hosted by PhotoBucket? I’m in for $20.

I don't think so, only images hosted on the RSC unless the person keeping their pics on PB has a paid package.

Has anyone figured out how to just use one of the PB plugins in a browser to run through and archive the site?

People are jumping in at the $20 for the text archives,
I still think a DVD with photos would be worth a quick $50 or more.

Thanks

If I understand correctly, the problem with the broken PhotoBucket links, is the photos are no longer available on the PB site without a paid PB membership. And even if there were a plugin that could be added to the original RSC to make they appear, they'd still likely be served up on the PB backend... And I'm not even sure if we have access to the RSC backend to make any changes. Right now I believe the only person who can do that is Gram and he's unavailable.

The archive will only picked up the links the photo is pointing to. So any photos that are hosted *on* the RSC server will be included in the archive and any hosting services, like Flicker, etc. will appear as long as the photo hosting service makes them available.

As for a DVD, that's something that could be consider after the archive is created if someone is willing to undertake it. We will have two copies of the archived site available for backup purposes from Archive.org, besides what will be available on line, but I'm not sure if we have the right to copy and distribute. I'll check with Archive.org to see if that's even possible. Copyright issues aside, I'm not certain the entire site would fit on a single DVD or how many it would take... it could be quite a few.

Is there a reason why you'd want to DVD instead of the online version?

The photos are still on Photobucket, you just need a plugin to see them in your browser.

If I use a plugin, and save the complete web page or save a .mht file, I have saved the pictures and the text. I just don't want to do that manually for the entire site.

The point of DVD would be to have the site as it is now, without relying on anything going down in the future.

So many people relied on PB, they pulled the plug and left a big hole here.

People relied on this forum always being here as it is...

Archive sites can decide to drop out too.

And right now you can still follow the links to PB and see a complete write up.

Even if the archive sites point to the PB links in the future, when the person pulls down their PB account our archive is gone.

The DVD would also provide a little going-away/thank you fund to Gram on the way out.

MidWestMike: The good news is, I just heard from Archive.org last night, and legally we are allowed to make copies. That said, the file size will be approximately 15 gigs, which means it would take 4 DVDs to fit it all. I'm sure there are some apps available for splitting large files on to multiple discs, but I haven't burned a disk in so long that I wouldn't know where to begin. Personally my new computer doesn't even have an optical drive.

I do know BubbaKahuna has his hands full right now, we're still putting the final touches on the new site, but first we have to complete the archive. After that I believe he'll be working on the iPhone and Android app. So I suppose it could be added to a list if he's willing to take it on, but I would be a while before getting around to it.

I would check with him after the dust settles and the app is finished.

Doc it might be easier for people to throw it all on a 32gb microSD. You can get them online for about $16. No disc burning needed. unless someone is really stuck on old school discs it's a lot easier. Most all of them come with the USB adapter to it plug straight into your computer.

That's not a bad idea and would be a lot easier to just drag and drop the files on to the USB sticks. Maybe people could send in their own USB sticks and we could copy the files on to it for them. We'll look into this more when the time comes.

FYI, we should probably continue this conversation over on the new site. This one will be closing down soon. Mike, maybe you could start a thread over there.
