Thanks all, I ordered the EZ-Tach 328+ Best of both worlds, clamp on and proximity.

There is a reason most younger people won't know Dwell Angle. How many vehicles are still running points? Even older vehicles have updated the old points system to reluctors or optical.

Guess I am still in the dark ages...I have an old runabout with a chevy 350 still running on points..Thought about changing it over but it just too easy to carry an extra set of points in the tool box if I need them...

To quote my father (he was a mechanic) You don't need spare points, just a bit of emery cloth!

I understand points from an authenticity, or "don't want to spend the money" perspective. I always found them to be the major fail point (when I lived in the Midwest) due to condensation in the humidity, and "bouncing" at higher speeds. I switched all of my 350's over to an HEI system at the first opportunity.

I wouldn't say you are in the dark ages though. Whatever works for you is good enough!

I have an EZ-Tach 328. You do have to use the 2 stroke setting to get the correct RPM with a wasted spark ignition. I have not used the proximity type, just the induction coil type. My friend has a Snap-On Ethos + machine made for OBD II interface that has an induction pickup that will show your wave form, just like an oscilloscope, and it will detect misfires and graph them, but that machine ain't cheap.

I have this model and i am uncertain on the proper settings.
Where do you connect the clamp from the ez-tach? and what is the proper tach setting; 2:1? Is 900 rpm +/- 50 rpm my goal?

Thank you in advance

I use the front most plug wire. You can get the induction clamp on it. You may have to turn the clamp 180 degrees if you don’t get a good signal.
You want 900rpms +/- 50rpms. Set it when the motor is hot. Take a nice ride, come home and set it immediately. After it’s set, leave it alone.
Set it to the 2 stroke setting. Only one setting will be even remotely close to what the rpms are.

Thanks ‘Peg. Yes, front left plug wire works the best, and mine is on the 2 stroke setting when I get the correct RPM. As our bikes use the wasted spark ignition system, there is a spark near TDC on every revolution. That being said, the inductive pulse of the “off power” spark is significantly less than that of the power stroke, as the power stroke requires substantially more energy to fire the plug, being in a compressed, saturated atmosphere versus the relative neutrality of an exhaust stroke.

And I never changed out the condenser if the contacts were ‘worn’ evenly. As to say, one side wasn’t loosing material to the other side and pitting.
