Wilfred did a great job on that write-up and I used it for the second time to replace the clutch spring (first time oil gear) but the Barnette spring up-grade has changed to an SR-2 model. I had trouble with the info given in the Barnette package (just a diagram) the back plate needs to be meshed in the back to your clutch before tightening the 6 bolts. I had to make a call to find out what was wrong after putting it back together then take it appart again.

Couple of suggestions:

1. You don't need a clutch boss tool if you use an air-hammer. The air-hammer takes the large nut off very easily. The bike must be in gear.

2. When the SR-2 is put on, if it can be twisted from side to side then it's on wrong. Remove and rotate it to the next bolt hole. Twist again (like the song ); if it's tight (doesn't move) then you have it properly aligned.

I found the hardest part was getting the clutch boss back on so that it meshed with the pump and primary gears.

Total time ---- less than 3 hours.

Those are great tips Doc!

Could you add them to the comments section at the end of the article?

Thanks, glad you thought them useful.

Like Draco, I had some difficulty determining whether the SR-2 was on the 'right' bolt holes. I checked the Forum and wasn't quite sure what was meant by 'aligning it'. By rotating the SR-2 and playing with it, I finally figured out what the difference was.

I finished last night so I haven't had a chance to ride it yet but the lever is certainly 'stiffer'. I guess that'll built up my left wrist.

I added my comments.

BTW: Your "See more about my bike" link below you pic does not work. How do I put my link below my pic?

I let that domain go Doc. I still have the data, but need to reformat it for a non-MSFrontpage website before putting it onto another one.

To add the url below your pic in your sig, go to the "my profile" option just below the "Road Star Clinic Forum" title at the top of this page. There is an entry text box there just like the one we put text into for a post that is for your sig. Underneath that text box there is a button with the label "url". If you pass your mouse over the button it will show how the syntax works for adding the url to your website.

Let me know if it gives you trouble, but I don't think it will.

Nice Website!

1). I used a screwdriver and was lucky I didn't break the basket.

2). The 3 or 4 gears / spline in the back of the spring plate need to mesh with the other part of the clutch(?) but I found the clutch plates were pushing out the spring plate making it a little tougher to mesh and align.

Sure feels like a clutch now ay Doc? Not very hard on the hand at all and clutch lever springs back proper.

Draco,

I was lucky enough to read all the good/bad stories on the R* Forum and was able to avoid such a costly mistake.

Ya, it does feel like a clutch very positive but my forearm gonna get big.
