just got a 2003 r/s silver ed. it has long shots on it. they don't have any baffles in them and thay are so loud. do these bikes need back pressure to run right? I was going to get the quiet baffles from v/h. has any body run these. or should I just bear it and keep the strait pipes. thanks scott

From North Florida. And yes, get some sort of baffles in there, as these bikes need the back pressure to perform properly. Others on here can give you some better advice on this.

I imagine they are loud. I pulled mine one day, when I installed a set of the BCTM quiet baffles. I rode the bike to lunch without anything in the pipes, and was baffled how anybody could ride without something in the pipes. The stock baffle isn't really much of a baffle, but it was better then nothing. It's just a cheese grater sleeve.
I think several people on here have used or are using, the quiet baffle your thinking about.

I had VH Long shots on my 01 RS I had a few years ago without baffles, seemed to run as designed. I'm 8 miles west of Worcester....welcome to the board!

I've got a set of VH longshots and even with baffles in them they were too loud for my tastes plus they had an annoying crack that I didn't care for. I tried every baffle mod that I could find to quiet them and nothing really worked. That is until one day I pulled the stock baffle and replaced it with one of my own design. Take a 3' x 4' piece of 1/4" or 1/8" steel mesh hardware cloth and cut it into two 17"x 48" strips. Either wrap it around a mandrel or roll it up on itself for a tighter core section. Slide this mesh tube up into the pipe and let it unwind inside the pipe. There's enough tension that it'll hold itself in place, but I added a lollipop made out of an eyebolt just to make sure it didn't come out. I've been running this for about a week now and I'm totally satisfied the results. It's an inexpensive alternative that is completely DIY and I think you'll be amazed at the difference.
