Unfortunately I did not. But the next time i'm on the west coast I plan on renting one through Eagle Riders or whoever has the best deal at the time in the area I happen to be. We get out there at least two times a year and look for places to tour preferably on a motorcycle so I should be able to give you a report in the not too distant future. And yes,
thank God my health has improved. Had a nice ride today with the wife from church to a specialty grocery in the next town then to a great little Mexican cafe in the next town after that. The tacos Al Pastor were wonderful. Then back home to steak & shrimp on my charcoal grill with a snowbird friend from Switzerland. He owned a Harley in Switzerland and when I let him test drive my Roadstar he absolutely loved it. He is 6'4" with back trouble and my Ultimate seats with backrest was the perfect solution to his getting back into riding. I'm 6'3" and my wife is a tad over 6' and we felt cramped on the RoadGlide we rented to ride Hwy1 from Monterey to Big Sur and my buddy voiced the same complaint that Harleys are just a bit too small to be really comfortable but he thought my Roadstar was a perfect fit.MikeyC wrote:
Hey Edgil! Would be good to see you there again.

Welcome back Curmudgeon, hope your doing better for the long run now, did you ever get to test ride an Indian?

Have some information regarding the motel in Spray. The house is reserved until Friday afternoon. There are 2 of the rooms reserved until friday. We are welcome however but don't know how the house issue effects things.

Hi,
You are very welcome.
The White House is reserved July 4th - 13th
Room #4 is reserved July 8-13
Room #5 is reserved July 8-13

Otherwise most everything is available for now with a few other rooms reserved here & there.

They have 8 rooms total with varying prices of $60-$110/night. The 3 bed house is $135/night The only issue I see with this is if we have more people than rooms available, the nearest motel is 40 miles away. There is RV and tent space though, with bathrooms/showers available.

Thoughts?

Just wondering if there is fuel available? 40 miles for the next room? would they have fuel also? It may be a lot to ask for one or two people to bring in all the supplies needed for the group.

There is fuel right next to the motel. I will be bringing my 35' Toy hauler so I will have a bunch of room to bring stuff. I will also have a couple beds available too.

My other thought is to stay in John Day in a rental house or two, as there are 3 available, as well as several motels at all price points. The Spray motel does sound pretty nice but not being able to get into the house until Friday afternoon may be a bummer. We could adjust to maybe go home Mon/Tuesday as well and have Saturday and Sunday planned rides.

Just remember, most folks work M-F, so gettimg more days off can be challenging. I assume we will again do two day rides. Yahoo!!!

Oh I get that, hell just getting there is going to be a bit of a ride for most people! I've gotta drag the 5'er so I'll miss that part. I'm thinking I will take Wed-Mon or tue off so I can get some more rides in as well. I suppose we could get the house for Fri-sun or Monday? or we look at other VRBO rentals. Again, my worry is if others go to meet up there not having more rooms available close by. Its just really hard to judge as it is hard to know who would and would not go.

Hey Jay, With that house tied up until Friday would John Day be a better bet? We could still do a loop thru Spray as that is a cool road. John Day has several motels and a great grocery store and gas, Sumpter has gas and Spray has gas, Fossil has gas.

Mike, the downsides of VRBO rentals is paying up front usually requires 50% or so down. Not knowing who is going to actually be there and who would want one of the 5 or 6 bedrooms makes it risky for those who do for sure. 3 nites works out to $285/night with fees, but if 5 people are staying there that's only $57/night each. Sent them an email to see what the possibilities are but have not heard back yet.

Jay and Mike. Count me in for a bedroom in any house, any nights. Sara will join me for some nights, but not all.
