Re:Front Brake Maint. 3 Years, 10 Months ago
My previous ride was a 2009 VRod w/abs. Brakes were a lot better than my "new" 2005 1700av. Ordered a new set of brakes just in case they'd hardened with age/lack of use. Got a "grippier" set of pads. Thanks for the procedures and pictures; they are way better than the shop manual. Can't believe I'm replacing them at 4100 miles!

I'm also guessing they have never been bled and your fluid is probably shot. I usually bleed mine every 2 years and it makes a big difference.

Glad I clicked on this. My 2007 RS Silverado has 5000KM on it now and I have not touched the brake fluid. What a nice reminder. Its time. The time is now.
many thanks for the write up.

I just used a set of the Kevlar pads on the front of a friends R* and he said they are just fine. Many will tell you to get a sintered pad and I will say that a sintered pad is a better pad. But if you are on a budget and in need of pads those will work fine. I can't speak for longevity but they will be easy on the rotor.

Here is a quick little read to explain the difference in pads.

The kevlar pads are considered an organic compound, but they are supposed to resist water absorption and be more linear than older organics. Just got sintered pads all the way around my SV for 84 bucks. Fronts alone are going to be near that for the Road Star.

I might have missed a reply questioning something from the original post, but....

Change fluid each time you change pads at least, to prevent problems. The system is actually vented and moisture gets in and makes the fluid "Snotty" and can booger things up from inside out.

The only time the system is exposed to atmosphere is when the system is opened. The reservoir cap is vented to the rubber boot. This allows it to maintain contact with the fluid as the level drops from pad wear.

But, there is no direct path for air/moisture to the fluid when the system is buttoned up. Most brake fluid gets contaminated from folks constantly adding a little fluid that has problems with caliper/master cylinder leaks.

Now, I do agree in flushing fluid @ each pad change.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
