Poor Mileage HSR42 Carb 7 Months, 1 Week ago
Hey all. This year my mileage has gotten worse than ever- consistently 30 mpg or less riding 70% freeway.
I'm at 2300 feet altitude and mid 90s to low 100 temp.
My hsr42 is tuned 25 pilot, 27 needle on the 1st clip (bottomed out), and a 165 main if memory serves.
The pilot feels a tiny bit rich, and it likes 3 turns out on pms. Might go down a size to 22.5. I have some sputter at 1/8 throttle that I can't decide whether it's tuning or just being off the cam. Main could actually go up to 170 most likely and make more power.
No matter how I ride it I'm getting the same mileage! I routinely got 36 in town when I bought it, even riding hard. I don't know what I messed up in all of my tuning attempts. I'm tapped out on talent, and can't afford a dyno, so I need help in a big way. Thanks.

Last time I pulled the plugs they were darn near white... no backfiring on deceleration or through the carb ever, just noisy when you throttle on it from a cruise like to pass on the freeway. Kinda like detonation.

Sounds lean to me. My plugs used to be white too, and the bike ran Great! Good mileage, no popping or backfiring. Then it started getting crappy mileage. Hope the folk here can help you get to where you should be.

Don't expect any sympathy for your low mileage tho. I've never got any.

So what made it start getting bad mileage in your case? The mileage is an indicator to me that the bike is running wrong, since it used to get much better mileage but now doesn't.

What is a 27 needle? There is no such Mikuni needle with that number. Mikuni needles are numbered differently than that like a 96-98. You say that you are on clip groove 1? are you sure you aren't on 5? I have never seen a bike run on groove 1. Groove 1 would be the groove closest to the flat end if that is where you have it your bike probably runs like shit and would be extremely lean. Move it to at least the 3rd groove and check the needle size number again. You also need to look for an air leak white plugs are definitely an indication of a lean condition. But if you are truly in the first groove with the clip that would explain the lean condition. In certain situations a lean condition can cause odd issues due to having to run it harder to get it to go.

My bad Dave the 27 is a typo. I'm running 97 needle. Yes it's all the way down on the flat side because I kept dropping it trying to get some mileage back, guess I will bump it back up.

I'll pull the plugs again after that, since last time I had them out it was while replacing a leaky manifold. Even with a brand new manifold and orings, spraying the back of the manifold indicates a leak, but it doesn't hunt idle any more or pop at all so I don't know if it's a problem. Is there a great solution to manifold leaks? I've dug through tech articles and posts and never found one.

Thanks for the input, guys. I really appreciate your help.

By the way Dave I did bump up a pilot when you suggested that awhile back, that's why I'm running a 25 instead of 20. That really helped with power.

Step the pilot up to a 27.5 . You also want to go to a #96 needle with the clip in the 3rd groove. I think that will get you close to where you need to be.

Ok deal. I'll try that. What do you suggest for my ignition timing based on my setup?
