I've had mine on and off several times and I have always put a thin film of copper gasketon them. It doesn't harden and it's almost the feel of Vaseline. Every time I remove them they are just like new. I wipe off the old and apply a Very Thin new film. It just helps stick the gasket to the surfaces vs. gluing them down.
