Mine have been reused about 5 times now. They're made to be reused. Could be something warped so they can't seal. Check everything for flatness before installing the new ones. And the inch pound wrench is a good idea - 86.4

Yes, that's what I did and will do again. Is it good or bad to use anti-seize on the cover bolt threads. Will that cause an over torque reading?

Clean all surfaces and put them on dry. I have reused some and done new ones bot and dry works fine.  |

While I've got the valve covers off to change the leaking gaskets, I'm gonna check the valves. Other than using the correct timing markings on the crank, do I need to do anything to ensure the hydraulic lifters are pumped up before I check the valve clearance? Run the engine a bit? Turn it over using the rear wheel? Or are the lifter springs strong enough to expand fully just sitting.

this got me to thinking.....without me looking it up how often they need adjusted? Mine ahve been done once. I hear no noises and bike runs strong and I wouldnt expect to have to adjust them but wondering when its recommended.
I have run with my small tank for so long with all the valve noise coming right at me that I know I'd notice any problem immediately. Good news is I can do mine without pulling the tank.  |

don't start the engine. things expand when warm or hot. This needs to be done cold. Keep in mind it really isn't a valve adjustment, it is synchronization of the 2 valves on the same rocker to open at the same time

Just turn the rear wheel until you see a set closed completely. Absolutely no need to check any timing marks or remove the side cover. You'll be able to tell when a set is closed by how easy it is to turn the pushrod. The lifters don't need to be pumped up at all. The shop manual makes it more difficult than necessary.

Thanks y'all. Gonna start on Saturday. Removing the cover and the decompression cover to send them for chroming. Got a quote of about $140 for both.

Here's a follow up question to this 5 month old thread. I installed new valve cover gaskets and now the front left of the rear cover is leaking. Very subtle, but after a hard 400 mile weekend ride it made a mess on the side cover and rear dual header. Do I dare torque the bolts a few inch pounds more, seal the gasket with something, what?
