That Valve Clatter is gone, I found the fix 10 Months ago
Ok, so about a year ago I bought the 05 Midnight S, from day one I was unhappy with a tapping, or a clacking engine noise.
Al the replies I got when I asked about what it could be basically got me this: leave it alone, these R*'s are just plain noisy!
Well, it has taken me a good long while to suss it through, but I have a fix, at least for mine.
I decided it was upper cylinder area noise, and NOT a knocker (thank God).
It is not the tappets, but close....
I pulled off the valve covers thinking it had to be under there, it was...
The rocker shafts ride on a carrier shaft, and my dial indicator showed there was .010" lateral play on all 4 rocker shafts.
I could bring a cylinder to TDC, and by hand slide the rocker shaft till it butted on the support, and that sharp sideways push produced a distinct clack!
OK, simple fix, shim it, the rocker shaft, so I did.
I used .005" SS shim stock, cut 4 thin "washers" that fit over the carrier shaft, and that was all it took.
It would have been a little better with maybe .007" shim stock, but I didn't have any.
This way there is still plenty of "looseness" for oil to work it way through and out the end of the rocker shaft.
The result was pretty dramatic, an hour long ride, and virtually no more upper cylinder clatter.

Here is the very first post from a year ago: http://roadstarclinic.com/component/option,com_fireboard/func,view/Itemid,187/catid,13/id,966157/

So, patience pays.

I'm glad you sorted it out, but that has been a "known" noise maker for a real long time. That's one reason people say to just ride it. Nice job though. I left mine alone (after I cost myself some money screwing with it) and it stopped making noise a couple of years ago.

The noise is caused by the shaft rotating back and forth against the retaining bolt. If you noticed half moon marks on the bolts that's where the noise is. Some time back a rider over on the RSR fixed his by machining a smaller cutout in the shafts for the bolts. I always figured shimming like you did would be easier. Good job.

So, how much for a full set of shims???

Well, if that rocker shaft problem was a "known" issue how come nobody ever mentioned it to me last year when I originally posted my concern about the clatter?
I tried to find a thread, or even a clue as to what it could be, but nothing as far as information ever came up.

So, if it was a "known issue" it was either forgotten, or "known" by a select few who were not into sharing...

As far as a kit goes, I cannot see how I could do that as each engine would possibly have slightly more or less lateral play on the shafts.
So, each time the modification would require placing a dial indicator on the shaft (shafts) and measuring.
Then just make a shim accordingly.
Like I said, my engine might have been even quieter if I used a slightly thicker shim, like .007", I just had no time to source that so I used some .005" SS stock.

So, it is officially a known issue now with a known fix....

We just don't care about it after awhile. It makes noise. It doesn't break. Ride it. Texasscott has posted about relieving the area that taps on the bolt a few times in the past, when somebody really lets their OCD get the best of them. The most common fix on here, has been to get a louder exhaust. It's also the most recommended.

This is the aftermarket solution guys are using on their HD's. Maybe something like it could be used on the Roadies?

I had seen that Video, but THAT fix is not what I did.
I shimmed the rocker shafts, not the carrier shaft, or that bolt that locks the carrier shaft in place.
I can see how that too could be a source of rattling, but in my case it was not.

Think rocker shaft end play, those shafts can move left to right on the carrier shaft by .010" (in my case), and CLACK loudly when they stop their shifting motion from side to side.

Anyway, I'm well pleased OCD or not, I finally have a quiet R*.
