Thanks for the welcomes! Im gonna assume that something was changed on my bike at some point. The yamaha oil filter is more recessed so i guess ill stick with that brand for now until i find another type of filter that will fit.

I had the same issue with some kn303c that I ordered off of Amazon. They are shallower than the filters I get from my local auto supplier. I contacted the seller and they took them back no questions asked. Guessing I'm not the only one to have this happen.

But you can see from the picture that i tightened it enough to goige the filter and im a big guy i turned it as hard as i could. Im afraid if i turned it any more i would deform or twist the body of the new filter.

I've also used wix filters with no problem. They are deeper also.

Both are 2005. I've used wix filters and also k&n filters purchased locally. I do always look at them now before I buy them though. I know what to look for in the filter now.
