This thread discusses the Content article: Changing your oil is easy
Just completed my pre-Street Vibrations (Reno) check up and oil change. I used Amsoil 10W40 MCF and thier filter SMF103C (Crome). I have heard a lot of good things about Amsoil, but couldn't believe it when I started up the motor. It was so much more quiet than before. Changing the oil on this bike is so much easier than the Virago I used to own. Good job Yamaha.

Re: Changing oil is easy??? The only trouble I ran into was getting the front oil plug off. I thought I read somewhere......use a 17mm Craftsman wrench. What I need to know is what kind of Crafstman?? Is there a wrench made that is thin enough to fit on the drain plug and is it open end or box?? Any info will be helpful. I finally had to use a chisel to get it lose.

For a great way to remove the crankcase oil bolt, go to Forum, New tech tips, and look for the post "Oil Plug Wrench". I did this right after I bought my RS and it seems to be the best thing I have found so far..

Re:Changing your oil is easy--4-Balt MD riders 9 Years, 3 Months ago

Hi all---Catonsville MD--just west of Baltimore. Good article. Yesturday I spend 3 hours trying to find Royal Purple 20x50 synthetic. Went to 2 Advanced Auto Parts stores--they only had 5x30 and 10x40. I asked if they could order me a case and they said YEA--@12.99/qt. I left. Went to 2 WalMart's looking for Mobil 1 20x50MC oil, did not find any. As a "let's pop in and see" I stopped in a Pep Boys. They had the Royal Purple 20x50 and several choices of 80-90 gear oil for the transfer case. Think today I may become the oil change man.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and VROOM VROOM Ride hard but safe!!!!

you probably buggered the plug up with the chisel, so replace it with a magnetic one from the parts store, they are 14mm but be sure to get the same thread..I have a sawed off box end that I use..

Well, at 2 years and 5 months ago, I hope he got it figured out by now
When I read that, though, I couldn't help wondering if he was trying to loosen the correct bolt, because there's plenty of room between that bolt and everything else. Overall, a very easy oil change procedure.
