If I recall correctly, the movement will be underneath the black rubber boot.

I don't see anything moving. So I'll have to open that puppy up and see if there is any oil missing in there.

that piston only moves about 1/2 inch total. but that 1/2 inch of pre-load adds 420lbs

OK. For those of you wondering where the movement should be; Timbo was right.
It's under the black rubber trim. It'll be between the red and green arrow in this picture

Movement is less than 1/2 inch and as Smokescreen says, it compreeses the spring.
