Work Shop Tach question 2 Years, 1 Month ago
|
|
I have seen a number of posts regarding what hand held tach to use on our bikes. Many have stated that a coil proximity type is better than wire induction. My question, I believe, relates to both.
Should the tach read double the actual RPM (due to waste spark.)
Also, I was wondering about the value of a wire induction type for troubleshooting misfire within a specific cable.
Any thoughts?
I cant remember the specific model but I think I saw one (on Amazon) that had both wire induction and coil proximity capability.

I have an EZ-Tach 328. You do have to use the 2 stroke setting to get the correct RPM with a wasted spark ignition. I have not used the proximity type, just the induction coil type. My friend has a Snap-On Ethos + machine made for OBD II interface that has an induction pickup that will show your wave form, just like an oscilloscope, and it will detect misfires and graph them, but that machine ain't cheap.

I've still got mine, also from Sears.
It is right next to my 9/16 distributor wrench.
(that thing worked good for shocks too..)
I wonder how many kids know what dwell is now?

Thanks all, I ordered the EZ-Tach 328+ Best of both worlds, clamp on and proximity.
There is a reason most younger people won't know Dwell Angle. How many vehicles are still running points? Even older vehicles have updated the old points system to reluctors or optical.

That's the same face I made every time I tried to get dwell right...
Between meter accuracy, parallax error, cranking speed, and meter response times, we were lucky to have the vehicle RUN!
I quit worrying about age when I turned 25! A 13 year old neighbor girl said "WOW!, how does it feel to be a QUARTER CENTURY OLD?)
That can set you back on your heels.
