Re:most dependable higher mileage bikes 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
My roadstar has 107k, last weekend I was on a group ride one 2007 Electra glide had over 400k and her husbands 2012 had 300k. They do their own maintenance and only real problem they told me about is each bike has had 10 stereos, after the 3rd one I would have probly went with an aftermarket deck. Also their bikes are stock which they say makes a big difference in reliability. I am a new rider so I really know nothing just figured I'd post what I heard last weekend and saw with my own eyes.

Not sure but aren't Goldwings opposed 4 or 6 cylinder engines?

I had a 82 Goldwing that I sold with over 150k on it. They were 4's until 1987 now they're 6's

We see Roadstars in the store with 100k to 200k on them all the time, that's not even considered a big deal.
Same thing with the Roadliners & Stratoliners, high miles aren't even blinked at.
Most of them are only here for tires, brakes & other wear items.
Reason for this is probably that ceramic compound that Yamaha invented in the 1990s to plate their cylinders.
Lots of people call it Nica-Sil but it's not. It's a transparent ceramic compound invented by Yamaha.
That's why you can usually see the original machining swirls in the cylinders, hasn't even worn through the ceramic.
Stuff is so slippery it almost eliminated wear as long as the oil is clean.
That's why Yamaha now has a 20 year/100,000 mile engine warranty against oil related failures on new bikes.

As far as my own experience, the highest mileage bike I've had was an Ex-CHP 1986 Kawasaki Police 1000.
Bought at auction with 42,000 duty miles on it, rode it for 16 years to 168,000 miles & sold it for $50 more than I paid for it.
That engine is an in-line 4 & an air cooled engine, the entire bike is built for abuse & 40 hrs/week riding.
Considering how the CHP rides their bikes, I'm surprised it lasted 42k much less cruising past 168k.

I think the thing with BMW is their typical owner is anal about every little nit pickin' thing that comes along. Plus the nature of the complexity of the newer models forgoes a lot of self maintenance. So when you look at those reports those are for reported work done at dealerships. I have had 3 BMW's and found them to be quite trustworthy. Plus there are fewer of them which may also skew the statistics. No doubt the Road Star is near the top of the heap. But Yamaha dirt bikes I had terrible luck with, Ripped the tranny out of every one of them. I also had a Goldwing that took a giant shit on me. Bought it for $2600, 6 months later sold it as a $600 parts bike. But every H-D I had, including the one I have now ( this one makes 8) have all been high maintenance.

Father Pobastard I had great luck with Yamaha dirt bikes over a 30 year period in my off road days.

The 79 IT 250 remains as one of my favorite bikes to this day. The 81 YZ 250 and 83 IT 490 I owned were other ones that stick out in my mind. Transmissions and clutches were rock solid in all of those.

Of about 25 (maybe more) dirt bikes that were almost never new when I bought them in those years, Honda XRs were the most reliable -- 7 or 8 of those-- followed closely by ring dingers made by Yamaha. Kawasakis were so so and Suzukis were by far the most troublesome.

The couple of Huskys were a special case. (250 and a 430)

Husqvarna was a Sweedish word for open your wallet if you plan to ride this weekend. (Yes Huskys were made in Sweeden along with vacuum cleaners before Cagiva bought the motorcycle operations and made an Italian mess out of the whole works).
