Seems like the later years have a higher gauge cable. Didn't make any difference on my 2008 over the stock ones.

That's because they weren't oxidized and worn out yet. I replaced mine on my 2012 because I knew it was an issue. The bike didn't have 100 miles on it when I did it. Of course it didn't make an immediate difference. It was a preventative measure.
Just like doing the Barnett spring when it only had about 15k on it. Was anything wrong with the clutch? Nope. But I knew with the way I ride it would be sooner rather than later.
Just like the charging system on my 2000 before my trip to FL. Was working fine. Going on a 3500 mile trip in less than 10 days and I like to do some preventative maintenance on known issues. Charging system is known to be weak and I'm relying on that bike to get me where I want to be, trouble free for a long haul.
None of my Roadstars have ever left me stranded on a long haul (or anywhere for that matter). Treat them right and they'll treat you right
That's why the clinic is so great. Little bit of maintenance on known issues goes a long way. Also, the replacement wires on my 2012 were a heavier gauge than stock (Erbmans). Just like the replacement wires on my 2000 were heavier than the stock wires that I replaced ( my own design). Just like the replacement wires I got from Davej for my 2005 were heavier than the stock ones I replaced

As said after a little time the OEM cables will get oxidized and that cause a bit of resistance. A lot of members have experienced this on older and even some of the newer models causing slow turn over and hard starting. The OEM cables are A 6ga cable and are minimally sufficient for the bike. My cables are 4ga cables made with a high quality cable and end terminals. The 4ga cable allows more available amperage to go to the starter when needed. Other competitor 4ga cables that are available are around $75 a set.
I'm not trying to make a living on selling cables like the others are. I'm just a retired mechanic that has been making cables for over 30 yrs that is trying to help out RSC members save a few bucks when upgrading to a better more efficient cable.
I personally have 2 ga cables on my bike but I also have a big Bore kit w/ HC pistons. My bike would barley turn over with the OEM 4ga cables. It turns over great with the 2ga cables and high tq starter.

I understand that connections get oxidized and cause starting problems. Usually you just need to wire brush, or steel wool the connections clean, re-install and coat the exposed connections with something to keep the moisture and oxygen out, that usually seems to work. On occasion I've had to replace the connection. Has anyone actually seen the copper strands under the insulation start oxidizing (tarnishing or turning green)? I thought the starting/charging issues were just on the 1600's and early 1700's, just asking. I typically don't spend money on something that's not broke unless I know it's a known issue. Is this one of those kind of nice to have but maybe not necessary on a 2006 or newer? I am kind of interested, just wondering if I'm missing something here, don't like to throw money around unless there's a good reason.
Thanks,
