If you run into any caveats just let me know and I'll be happy to help. Our bikes are already vented at the gas tank level with the vent hose, but it's not enough for the Mikuni. I just took the pics and wrote the article, credit goes to Joe at A-1 sportscenter for telling me how to do it.

[b]Hi: I've tried everything from disconnecting the hose to roll over valve as well as cutting off the 1st 1/4 inch of the vent tube only to find maybe a 1/32 inch hole and then bending the tube straight to drill through the secondary I was told, and it all still hasn't helped. My tank the other night started to implode until I removed a major vacuum gas cap which got rid of the dent. I guess the clog must be seriously deep inside the vent tube breather line. Couldn't even blow through it with a compressor...go figure. Anyways, I'm gonna give this a shot because that was my last alternative was to have a vented gas cap. Maybe now, I won't have no problems if I do this right. Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes. I look at it like this....If I go down with this thing, unless I'm crawling, I'm probably history anyways...LOL.

There's only a three places it could be plugged:

1. the roll-over valve - you 'disconnected' it.

2. the vent tube from the tank - I assume you drilled right through it. I did mine and once I drilled it out I could easily blow throught it.

3. the rubber vent hose - if you can't blow throught it, then just replace it.

Hi Doc: I've done all 3 and it's still clogged. Somehow, it's still clogged inside the vent tube within the tank. I'll try Mike's Gas cap mod and be done with it. The only thing the Dealer said was there was something about the rollover valve and that's it. Unlucky me to be able to get a New tank replacement. Anyways, I'm off to do the other right now...hopefully, without screwing it up...LOL...Thanks.

The only was to unclog the vent tube on the tank is to 'carefully' staighten it. Then use a bit slightly larger than the hole and drill all the way through.

When I did mine I can across two problems. The bit I had was a bit too short and I a broke a bit in the vent hole Luckily there was enough of the bit protruding that I could use vise clamps to pull it out.

The vent tube does exit in the tank in a downwards position but sideways off the tube. That's why you cannot use a wire to 'clean' it out.

Hi Doc: Actually I cut the 1st 1/4 inch right off the vent tube and was told that there was a secondary past the bend which I did bend it straight and drilled that, as you said, with a long enough bit and big enough that it should have cured this problem...but it didn't. Right now, I just completed the gas cap mod of Mike's. I noticed the two small 1/32 holes it leaves after pulling the small rubber plugs, so I shouldn't have anymore problems, I would think. Everything came out sweet. Now with some good weather, I'll see what happens. When I just went to get the gas cap, my tank was slightly imploded again due to vacuum. I'm sure after this I'll be okay, as long as I don't dump the bike...LOL...Anyways, thanks for the input, and I'll see how this works out.

Hi Doc: Actually, I realized this write-up on the Gas cap goes to Taz, I thought Mike...just read it wrong...Thanks Taz, it came out good. Thanks Doc, my problem has disappeared. It was simple enough to do, but after doing everything else, like I put in another post, this was the last alternative. I'm very happy...no more vacuum or implosion on tank.

Hi Phil,
Glad it worked out for you! I did this mod because I run the Mikuni 42HSR on my Road Star and the tank does need the vent for this. Normally when you run into the issues you've described if you follow the vent hose from the tank down behind the battery box you'll find the anti-rollover valve. Remove it and replace it with a small fuel filter and just let it hang along with venting the cap and it works just fine. At first I was worried the cap would overflow gas but we just got back from a 2000 mile + trip to Star Days in St. Jo and it never even spit at me.
