Rumble on decel 4 Years, 10 Months ago
Hello Road Star Clinic,

I am new to the clinic and new to the road star world. At the end of last year I bought my first road star. 2001 Silverado edition. Mods include a Kuryakyn hypercharger and supertrapp exhaust. These mods were already installed on the bike and I am under the impression that the bike is properly jetted. I have a metric bike mechanic that I brought it to in order to make sure everything looks good and he agrees that the bike is jetted properly for the mods.

My question is this: with the baffles removed from the exhaust, the bike rumbles a lot on deceleration. Do you guys think that this can be alleviated by different jetting or is this just what's going to happen with the baffles removed?

My mechanic recently replaced the intake (cracked) and pipe gaskets, so I know it's not that (I've read that these are common issues with deceleration noise).

Any ideas?

Happy to meet you guys. Even happier to own a star.

from eastern PA!

The rumbling is backfiring. There's a guide to tweak your PMS to fix it here:

After something like a jet kit or pipes or intake is installed, you should adjust your carb to fit your mods.

from NE Louisiana. If the bike still has the AIS on it, you need to remove it. If it is already gone, you probably just have some normal decel popping from an open exhaust.

My V&H's without the stock baffles, sounded like a logging truck using it's motor(jake) brake coming down a grade, when slowing down in gear. If your leaving the baffles out, it's gonna be loud, and rumbling that was not noticeable and or unpleasant with the baffles in, will be very noticeable without.
If it is popping loudly, then you may be able to tweak it a bit with the PMS as Fatjay suggested, and or make sure the AIS has been removed.

Plus 101 - when I was younger and hard headed (not too long ago) the first thing I wanted when I bought a different bike was LOUD! A few years ago I was bored one day and stuck the baffles back in my long shots and they never came back out. Bike just felt happier! Riding was even more enjoyable and that annoying fluffing sound on decel was just about completely gone.
