DEAD REAR CYLINDER 4 Years, 3 Months ago
|
|
Hey guys i need some serious help. Today while riding my rear cylinder stopped firing. I tried changing plugs but no luck. The rear did seem to fire sporadically when i gave it a little throttle with the bike in neutral but nothing consistent. With the rear plugs installed with wires removed, (so only front wires plugged in) the bike fired up. With only rear plugged in the bike did not start. I did primary resistance test on coils (terminal to terminal) and both coils read 2.1 ohms. When doing secondary resistance (plug wire to plug wire), the front coil read about 20k ohms (a little high i know) but the rear coil read OL on that test.... Please help

Sounds like you need a coil.

Sounds more like a bad wire. If terminal to terminal is 2.1 and plug wire through coil to plug wire is OL (ohms too high indicating an "open" circuit) then I would start by replacing the rear wires. Now I'm just going by basic electrical trouble shooting here, not specific experience with that circuit of the bike.

I lost the rear coil on my '04 somewhere around 8-10K (couple years ago). It's been too long to remember the readings exactly, but I replaced both with Dyna DC4-1 coils and have never had a problem since. I believe they were 2.2 Ohm. I haven't checked prices for a while but I think you can still get a pair for around $125. I spent $140 but found them cheaper somewhere a week or two after I got her back together. Anyway, wish you luck.

The coil has 2 wire windings in it. according to the meter readings the primary winding is fine, but the secondary is dead. The spark plug wires can not be replaced as they are built into the coil. Replacement of the coil gets you a new coil and new plug wires.

yes i did check the caps. All 4 read right around 10k ohms.(9.79-10.13) was the range of ther readings i got. i tried the secondary resistance test without the caps on just probing the ends of the spark plug wires with my meter and still got OL on that test. My local dealership opens in about 20 minutes but im not sure if they will have my coil in stock. And of course, my bike is my only transportation at the moment. Thats why i was asking about the 1700 coils. newer bike, maybe more likely to have them in stock....

i was just checking part numbers on coils, and it looks like the front coil has the same part number all the wau up through 2012 was the newest i looked at. But the rear has changed a few times. Mine is a 2000. I saw a superseded part number for mine and a different part number all together for the 1700
