Mobile 1 20 w 40 and other dumb questions! 9 Years, 9 Months ago
few quick questions here ... i am pretty new so take er easy and I did check around for other posts to answers but could not find anything:

1. Can I use the Mobile 1 20 W40 both as engine oil and in the transfer case?

2. I tried to check the pressure in my tires and they look fine but put the gauge on there and only showed a reading of ten psi. It must be the gauge. Any thoughts?

3. For changing oil in engine the specs for my bike require 4.3 quart and transfer case requires .43 quart. How do I actually add these fractions of a quart when most containers are full quarts?

4. Has anyone tried to change their own tires and had success? I honestly have some time on my hands but I do not want to get involved in something that is technically impossible. I only ask because most place around here charge an arm and a leg to do this and it does not seem overly complex. Any thoughts?

I'm not an oil expert, but you should only use 4qts not 4.3. As for the air gauge, I would get a new one. Tire pressure is a safety issue. I run 41 rear and 38 up front. I'll let the oil guys address the others.

Goinforabeer1.

1. As long as it's not "energy conserving" it should be okay.

2. Regardless of the brand of tire a good tire gauge (digital perhaps) is a wise investment. Like Javawave says it's a safety issue!

3. Stick with the 4 quarts. Others will explain why I'm sure.

4. Depending if you have spokes or mags it's still a hassle but if you want to save a few bucks, not impossible.

Hey there GoingforaBeer1...
...
My dealer is pretty adiment about using transfer case oil in the transfer case and motor oil in the motor... But, you'll hear a lot of differing opinions 'bout that...
I would definately invest in a new tire gage (or two, or three...) as a matter of fact... see my last comment for more on that...
It's pretty well established around here that 4 Qts. is a great place to stop adding oil... Plus it's kinda convieniant that oil comes in quart containers... so you don't have to measure...
As far as changing tires... You, like I will today, should visit your nearest Harbor Freight store...
I'm going into the accent lighting business starting this month and this afternoon's trip to H-F is for a 1200# "drive-on" bike lift, a 1500# motorcycle jack... a cycle stand and quite a few other odds and ends that are on my list... (Including two or three tire gages of varying qualities...) But, H-F has a motorcycle tire changing machine that you can balance wheels on as well... (and it is not a ton of money!) It'll pay for it's self with four tires!

as they said, 4 qts. not 4.3 should do it, I use 20/50 amsoil motorcycle or Mobil 1 20/50 motorcycle oil.
and Use Mobil one synthetic 80/90 in the transfer case, Has the yami requirements.

thanks so much .... do you know if it is really necessary to use a torque wrench to tighten nuts after changing the oil ... i usually give a good hand tighten and that works fine. any thoughts?

I've changed my own tires and I don't have any special equipment ... just normal shop tools.

I have a couple of torque wrenchs in my too box but don't use them very often, especially not to tighten the oil plugs.

So ..... where are we goin for a beer?

I switched to the mobile 1 Vtwin synthetic 20/50 and the 80/90 in the transfer case on the first oil change and have been really happy with the noise reduction.

As for the tire guage, I checked mine when I first rolled it out this year, showed 36 front and rear. Happened to check it again with a borrowed guage and showed 15/18. Bought a new small compressor with an adjustable automatic shut off, made sure it was accurate and now just set it for 38, hook it up and turn it on and I know for sure what I've got in the tires.

This is good timing. I plan to change the transfer gearcase oil sometime in the next couple of days. Clymer recommends SAE80 GL-4. I bought Bel Ray Hypoid Gear Oil SAE 80W 90 from a small bike service shop near home. Anyone familiar with this product.

Cheers
