.223/5.56 rounds are NOT designed to fragment. I base my knowlege on 23 years active duty as a small arms instructor. You can buy frangible rounds for practice but they are worthless for defensive purposes. Buckshot from any normal factory round will NOT penetrate numerous walls. The reason shotguns are used by police as entry weapons and CQB is specifically due to the lower penetration. Please research and know the subject matter before offering advice on firearms. Bad/incorrect information can be potentially deadly.

12g is great for breaching just about any door lol

Soo many rounds will penetrate multiple walls of most homes including exterior. Seen .44mag bullets go thru frt exterior, both sides of next interior and thru one side of the next in a 50's built home wet plaster walls no less. I know one guy shot an intruder with a 12g rubber slug blew apart his thigh. #4 or #6 shot will destroy a person at close range. 25 years ago had an accidental discharge w .45 knocked it off nightstand went off and the bullet went up into a 3/4" oak window trim, back out and through the cieling. A .22 LR will make sufficient energy at 200yds+ to penetrate a human being. The 7.62x39 may not have the range or velocity of a .223 but it has frontal area, and packs a lot of wallop. Shoot a cinder block wall with an AK rd and then a .223 LOL

Exactly. That's why my AK platform weapons are my go-to SHTF firearms. Home defense favorite is still one of my railed 1911's with attached light, loaded with Speer Gold Dots.

You'll want to go with the 5.56 chambered rifle, as mentioned it is NOT the same as the 223. From what I've read AR's are actually decent at home defense as the rounds were meant to fragment. I've also read that buckshot isn't that great as it will penetrate multiple walls, I imagine slugs would be the same. If you aren't familiar with AR's they are also quite a chore to clean. Mine stays pretty close at hand but for a bump in the night my go-to's are my 1911 and Glock 17. You will want to be able to manipulate a tac light with your defense gun so be ready to get a mount or rails for an AR. Most polymer pistols already have a rail to mount a light, or you can learn to shoot while holding a light with your weak hand..preferred so you aren't pointing a loaded gun everywhere the light goes.

Also be mindful that the light gives someone else a target to shoot at. Strobing works but can knock out your night vision too. If you do the weak hand thing, keep the light away from yourself as much as possible. Low and out I was taught

I just bought my AR from Bud's. It's a Doublestar, made in Kentucky. Very nice shooter! It's a flat top so I bought the carry handle and a scope for it. So far I have zero complaints

Hmmm...gonna have to copy and paste the link to get you to the gun ad!

That's a tricky post count.

Home defense-20 ga. pump shotgun with a light attached is thought by many (myself included) to be the best choice. Softer recoil than a 12 so your better half will be more likely to train and use it. Pump vs semi due to reliability and the pucker factor bad guys get when hearing a slide racked in the dark has been proven to be a psychological deterrent. .223 (or whatever flavor your AR would be) has too much penetration for home defense use. I personally use what I carry...1911 in .45 acp. I find it works for me best to not change defensive weapon platforms whether in the home or out. I am a strong 2A proponent and wish everyone would protect themselves responsibly. By this, I mean be familiar with your weapons and train/practice whenever possible. Make sure every adult in the house does the same. Keep safe.

PS...in your price range for an AR, look into DPMS or, better yet, build one yourself. I've built quite a few. Pretty easy and you get what you want.
Can u really build one for that cheap. I thought 750 was a decent price for a ar LOl

Last one I built was under $550. PSA lower, MOE parts kit from PSA, CMMG upper. Entire lower was $210 and you can build it cheaper if you just do a basic LPK. PSA sells it for $99 and the lower for 69-79. You can get everything you need even cheaper if you buy from sites like ar15.com, snipershide, 24hourcampfire, etc...lots of guys buy rifles, take stuff off immediately to upgrade, and sell cheap. Bought my last upper, unused, for $300 shipped. I just sold a NIB DPMS Classic 16 A2 for $600. Shop around...there are plenty of deals out there.

+1 on the shot gun for home defense, I personally prefer 7 1/2 bird shot for my home defense. They will bleed to death before they can plug all those little holes and if they are close enough the shot and wadding will be like a slug hitting them.
