Will Not Start 3 Years, 10 Months ago
Cannot get my 2000 RS to start. I have a new battery installed. When I hit the start switch it makes a click sound around the engine area. Not at the starter & not at the relay. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Check your ground and positive leads and make sure you have clean connections.

+1 Amazing how a bad connection can effect it. If the battery is good, I would look there first!

Check the connections as others have stated.

As for the clicking noise, that isn't the starter or relay, is it on the right side of the bike?

I'm not aware of them making much noise, but I wonder if you could be hearing the decompression solenoid.

New batteries can be bad like Erbman said have the battery load tested. It also may need to be charged and make sure the post and the cables are clean.

I have cleaned all the connections and it is a brand new battery?

Take a heavy wire and go directly from the battery positive to the starter. With the key on touch the wires and see if she turns over, this will determine if it's the starter. If she turns over I would look at the starter relay.

Other things that can keep it from starting:

  1. Kill switch - make sure it's off.

  2. Kickstand switch - make sure it's not faulty (put it in neutral to start)

I have cleaned all the connections at the battery (+ & -), and cleaned the connection where it grounds to the engine (Oil Fill/Dipstick). The battery has 12.5 volt charge. it drops to 12.2 volts when ignition is turned on. when I hit the start button it drops to 12 volts. The clicking is coming from the right side it seems. I haven't had the battery load checked. I thought me measuring voltage while hitting the start button would be about the same?
