Transfer case overfill warning! 5 Months, 1 Week ago

I try to do my maintenance the way the manuals say, unless I read on RSC that there's a better method or formula. I just replaced my oil seal behind the front sprocket as it was leaking gear oil. Then when all was re-installed, I opened up the gear case full-check hole. That's the little one below the large opening just above it. I was surprised to find oil was still full enough to leak out. That's after losing as much as 8 oz. in leakage on the ground when parked one night and whatever leaked when riding.
That case only takes .42 quarts, which is about 14 oz. So I must have overfilled it at last change by more than 50% over the proper amount! The only thing I can figure is I must have filled it while leaning on the kickstand and all that extra oil was creating too much pressure on the seal.
The manuals say to have someone hold the bike upright while checking the level. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm by my lonesome whenever I'm working on the bike, so I have to do other things. I've found the the bottom of my bikes are not level with the ground when on my jack so that I have to shim up one side of the jack to make the bike vertical. In fact, my jack changes angles depending on the height it goes up. So now I will be using the jack at the proper angle for this critical angle in the future.
My suggestion is to make sure you didn't accidentally fill while on the kickstand. It doesn't look like much oil will go beyond recommended, but it will. Plus, don't count on your jack to hold the bike level.

Just remove the fill check plug and with a pan to catch the overflow balance the bike while sitting on it and see if any comes out.
If not, add till it does.

So let's see. One hand on the right handgrip, one hand on the left grip, one hand to hold the funnel and tube, and one hand to pour the oil. Okie, dokie. LOL!

I don't think there is any pressure in there. Put the bike on its kick stand. Fill through the big hole until oil runs out the small hole. Replace the big hole cap. Put a pan under the small hole. Sit on the bike and hold it level until oil quits running out the small hole. "Don't think too much....you'll hurt the team."

Bike should be level and fill till it runs out the small hole. Just make sure you have a drain pan of some sort because it is hard to clean up

Others would describe that as being "thorough".

I have to agree with BikeRon...anyone consider just putting something under the kickstand to level the bike? You don't need 3 arms to do that.

I think BikerRon is suggesting to drain and add back at least the recommended amount and maybe a little more. Then, with the small check hole plug out, sit on the bike and stand it upright. Watch and wait until any excess, stops draining(dribbling) out of the check hole. When it does, lean the bike back over on the side stand, wipe up the dribble on the case, and reinstall the plug and fill hole cap. Easy peasy.
