Choke Cable Replacement 9 Years ago
Anyone ever had to replace this part?

I've FUBAR'd mine and it can't be repaired. Since it's really kind of necessary I'm going to replace it, but I have a question for anyone who has replaced this.

In the diagram, the choke cable is broken up into two part numbers. Part 33 is the actual cable and Part 38 is the "starter set". My question is: Must both parts be replaced at the same time, or can just the cable portion be removed and then reinstalled on the existing "starter set"?

Any input would be great.

What did you do just mess up cable? If the innards are still in good shape and all you need is a cable try checking out your local marine supply (like e&b or west marine) and look into swagging some small dia. ss cable to whats left of the choke cable; but all that takes some inginuity. If you just want to order it from the dealer they'll let you know if it's 2 pieces or 1.

I suggest you pull it and look at the carb end .I have removed all the carb end parts to thread my cable through my home made bracket when I got rid of my pump. The part that screwed into the carb was too large.I had to disassemble it to fit through the hole I drilled. Here is a blury pic of it.The end is bent in an "L" to hold the pieces in place.Hope this helps....Coug

Coug,
The fact that you have told me that you have been able to disassembled the cable from the starter set really kinda tells me what I need to know.

The part that's broken is the threaded piece that holds the cable into the bracket. Maybe if I just bite the bullet and take everything apart I'll be able to work out some kind of fix for it. But using super glue on the broken plastic parts(which was my first attempt to fix it) wasn't the the right thing to do.

Thanks,

M7

That's good to know, I would have thought that it would be sold as a complete unit.. Just don't bend it too many times...

This is an old post (2009) so they won't answer as Cougar isn't here any more. You can just replace the cable only. If you would go to the introduction forum and introduce yourself and Thanks!

Re:Choke Cable Replacement 5 Years, 4 Months ago
i broke mine last week when i was putting my carb back together. the cable was fine i just broke it on the nob end, as i was screwing the plastic nut back on it cracked in half on the plastic threads. i now have it rigged up to work but i know it will not last and i will have to rig it back up again. i couldn't take it so i ordered a whole new set up from maxairenbineering and they were very helpful! they build the cable and nob setup there and it comes to you finished.

here is the link and the cable is for the OEM 40mm CV and it can also be used on the 42mm HSR flat carb.

Sorry but they are way overpriced. Get the Mikuni cable that has a length adjustment built into it for about 1/3 their price.

Re:Choke Cable Replacement 9 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I can't seem to catch a break, Bike is all together, but still waiting for more float level info, and now I broke the plastic nut that holds the choke cable on. Fine, I go to look for a steel nut that will fit and then I break the cable itself at the plastic connection. GRRR! I know this thread is ancient, but I did find this in my search of the site.

The stock Yamaha cable is $75! I found a mikuni cable for the HS40 and the HSR42 - both for less than half that. The thread seems to point to either one will work. What I don't see is any adjustment that Curt mentions. Anyone else dealt with this issue recently?

Here is the search on Ebay for the part # I found looking on the Mikuni factory site.

Help?
