Tire tubes 3 Years, 11 Months ago
I'm looking into getting some new tires because I'm due and I was wondering should I change the tubes out. Was wondering what some of your experiences have been in the past and if it's recommended that I change them out what is a good brand?

Just my 2 cents. A new tire deserves a new tube. I've had one fail after reuse. Bridgestone and metzler are good tubes.

Of course everyone is going to tell you to replace them… "it's cheap insurance"… "Why not"… "You're stupid if you don't"… "You're asking for trouble"…

That said…

Before I started mounting my own tires, I took one of my wheels to a reputable, local independent shop, who I've used regularly for many years. They've been around a long, long time and do lots of business and I've never heard a bad thing about them. When I went back to pick up my wheel with newly mounted tire, the guy handed back the new tube I gave to them. He told me the one that came off the bike was perfectly fine; so they didn't see the need to waste a perfectly good tube. Said to save the new tube for next time. I never had any problems with the reused tube. That said, it was only a year old and they knew they had put it on last time. If the one you're considering is more than a few years old, I'd replace it.

But as always… YMMV.

All good point of views thanks guys. I've had the bike over a year and I bought it used so I'm not sure what they did last set so to be safe guess I'll be shopping for some tubes.

On a "new to you bike" I would change the tube for sure. There after you can run a tube for at least 2 tire changes. I run Metzeler tubes till my third tire change and have been doing that for years, just make sure your inside rim is free of RUST AND CLEANED GOOD and of course inspect the tube.

If you are changing the tube look at getting a 90 degree angle stem for the front tire. I have spoked wheels on my 02 and went with a 90 degree stem which made checking and inflating the tire much easier.

If you get another tube, carry the old rear one with you when you travel. I spent hours one day trying to find a replacement tube while on the road once...

It will work in rear or front if needed.
