Clutch Issues 6 Months, 1 Week ago
So I've never had this happen before. When riding in traffic in Branson this past weekend (it was HOT and Humid, and the bike was REALLY hot), I started to notice that my clutch handle pull was getting longer and longer to the point where I would pull the clutch lever all the way and the clutch wouldn't disengage. At first I thought that maybe the clutch cable broke. Pulled into a parking lot and took a look. Clutch cable was fine. I pulled the clutch and watched the lever down on the engine move fully, but I could feel that it wasn't actuating the clutch at all. What the hell could cause that? It was working fine until I was stuck in traffic for a while in Branson and the bike heated up. I'm assuming it was a heat issue, but I've had the bike in those situations before and that's never happened. It has the Barnett clutch plate in it.

In a nutshell.

All those plates and discs will expand from the added heat and pretty much eats up any movement the Barnett pressure plate needs to disengage all of it.

To get the mechanical advantage through the clutch handle, the lever at the clutch cover pulling on that small gear that pulls on pressure plate you're really not moving much in there to get the plates to separate a small bit.

Loose that clearance and a clutch will drag, badly.

Double check your cable free play. Too much will amplify the problem.

I had a bit of free play in the clutch handle and I adjusted that out and it still wouldn't disengage the clutch. Let it sit for about 20 min or so and it was ok. Ironically, when I tried to start it I ended up getting carb puke. Five and a half years I've had this bike and it's never given me any issues until now. Two issues in 20 min, 500 miles from home. Needless to say I was pretty pissed off.

Shit happens. It's just a machine.

Realize too, that excessive heat will warp the plates and that will take up extra space they'll need to saperate cleanly.

Green is known to be an unlucky color for motorcycles. Maybe if you painted it a different color it would fix it.

DAMN!! Now you guys are making me REALLY nervous!!

We have 70 days a year here in Las Vegas where the daily temp is ABOVE 100*. It's almost 9 PM right now and it's still 92* outside.

Sitting at stoplights in the middle of the day while trying to cruise the Las Vegas Strip is not a good idea this time of year. We tried it last month and had to pull off and hit the freeway to cool the bike (and my leg) down before heading home.

Good to know. Just put on a new clutch cable and will double check the tension with this in mind.

Adding to the expanding parts with the heat, the barnett pressure plate is a pretty thick plate of aluminum and as everyone knows Alum has one of the highest coefficients of Thermal expansion. Dang it must have been HOT there.

It was pretty warm and humid, but I had also run a pretty twisty highway right before we got to town. Lots up accelerating and decelerating. But we had been sitting in traffic, literally stop for 5 min, move 20 feet, stop for 5 min for almost an hour before it happened.

Wow yeah motor was probably super hot. Would be nice if we had oil temp gauges on these R*'s. I try to turn my engine off on hot days if I think its going to be a long stop.

With all that heat I wonder if the clutch stack may have stuck together some from the oil thinning.. kind of like gauge blocks do,.. they wring and stick.
