OK carb guys..... 6 Years, 10 Months ago
|
|
I just got back from a 2000 miler and I need advice. My fuel light comes on at 110 miles. I have the stock air can with a K&N filter and stock pipes. When my bike is cold and even when I stop for fuel, I need a little choke. At highway speed, when I ask for throttle, it seems to kind of lumber along instead of jumping and running. My riding buddy has an 06 like mine except for pipes and Hypercharger. He gets around 180 miles on a tank. He thinks my bike is needing air, my brother seems to think it is a jetting issue. I really don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

When your fuel light comes on how much fuel have you used since the last fill up? you seem to have 2 issues 1 indication of lean (the need for choke after a short gas stop) and one indication of rich (low MPG). Has anyone been in the carb?

The first thing I'd do is check the float level.
By K&N do you mean the stock replacement filter and if so is the crankcase vent still connected to the airbox? If it is then I can tell ya that it'll make a mess of the bottom of the filter.
It's entirely possible to be lean when starting and rich while running.

Sure its possible. Hopefully a plugged/dirty air filter is half the problem.

+1 on air filter. Clean it and see what happens. Gas mileage should improve along with idle problems.Easyest thing to start with.

I have hypercharger and v&h stubs. My 06 roadie started bogging down as i upshifted and eventually stalled out when i got to a stop sign. Now she will turn on but kill soon after. I turned the idle cable to no avail. Do i need reject or carbs cleaned? Stock carb.

Please start your issue on your own thread. It will be less confusing to those who are trying to help. He has a stock set-up and you don't, that right there can make it confusing. we don't want to start cross helping, since you might take advise that was directed at him, and vice-versa. Thanks. also pleas give as much detail to how the carb is jetted, whether this issue just started, whether you just did some work to the bike, the more detail, the better for those who help to go in the right direction for ya. again, thanx

Going by the fuel light really doesn't tell us how many miles per gallon. And speeds over 70mph are gonna eat up gas as well. Could be a float level issue, or something as simple as a dirty filter, fouled plugs. Is this something that just started? Has the bike been in winter hibernation? Could be multiple issues as well. for the starting, could be a slightly clogged pilot jet, cruise, could be dirty filter, plugs. Are you going to get into the carb yourself, or turn it over to the stealers, oops, mean dealer. lol
