I just checked the website (www.invisibleglass.com/HowTo.htm). At the bottom of the section labelled "About Invisible Glass" it says "Not recommended for use on polycarbonate plastic." I'd be careful with this.

Yamaha stock shield is polycarbonate. Cee Bailey's, Memphis Shades, Etc. Aftermarket shields are mostly high impact acrylic. Acrylic is usually not coated, as it has a higher shore hardness than polycarbonate. Acrylic has a massively lower notch sensitivity index, but all the aftermarket shields I know of are D.O.T. grade material.

National Cycle has aftermarket polycarbonate shields. Don't know about any others.
Acrylic can have scratches polished out. In spite of advertising to the contrary, polishing scratches out of polycarbonate remains a "black art". Most have a hard coat on the outside that can peel away, and is ruined by any compounds. Think modern composite headlights. You can do the "fix" on them, and they look great if you do it right, but you are not looking through it at the road. I am sceptical about any hope of getting optical clarity back in a poly shield with any form of surface polishing. Acrylic is hard enough. Done many of them on aircraft, but they are 2 inches thick on average, so you have a good base to bear against. A bike shield would be beyond tough to get a good finish on. Not saying it couldn't be done, but the labor involved might slam into the 'ol diminishing returns pretty quick.

I don't use it on my bike, but Invisible Glass is awesome! I use it on all my vehicles and it works great and it's safe for tinted glass. Stoner the company that makes it sells and awesome bug and tar remover too! Works great on love bugs, but its not safe to leave on plastics. If you spray it on plastic you shouldn't let it sit long.

Do you like BEER?

People will try to tell you that BEER is bad for you too, but that's just to keep you from drinking up all the BEER from them!

Just kidding. The hard coat on poly screens is succeptable to chemical attack at the edge of the sheet, as the bond line is exposed to that atmosphere there. If you have ever lost a hard coat, you know it starts at the edge of a part, or the edge of a scratch.

Lots of times products may be suitable for some task, but rather than educate the whole world on transparent plastics, it is decided to just "not reccomend" it for that task. I suppose there is a way to avoid lifting the hard coat, and still use the Invisible glass, and it just might be wiping the edge immediately, and keeping the emulsified product away from the bond line. If it's working for you, great.

Remember the labels of consumer products are written for the lowest common denominator that can read the thing, and I'm sure you all know from just walking around, the number of points on the intelligence spectrum is legion!

Take care of your stuff, as befits your experience, share, compare, and make your own call.

I took the time to actually call the CS line for Invisible Glass and ask them point blank if their product was safe to use on poly windshields with hard coat applied. Their answer to me was it is NOT safe to use. IG is great for use on glass, but plastics are a whole other animal.

So, do as you please, but if you use IG and your plastic windscreen goes yellow, cloudy or shows signs that the hard coat is failing remember who to blame: it's the guy in that super clean and shiny mirror that you keep clean and shiny with Invisible Glass!

Ride safe y'all,

-M7

Figured I'd add my 2 cents here. I sometimes get small scratches in my silverado shield from scrubbing all the bugs off all the time. Discovered a meguiars product called plastix. I use it with a high speed buffing wheel with a light cut foam pad. Be careful, it doesn't take much to overheat and start melting the shield. Works like a champ. I also always wax the shield every time I wash it. Makes cleaning a lot easier.

Hey Mark, you want to call all the DS tire manufacturers and ask them point blank if their tires are "safe" to use on motorcycles?

If nobody ever thinks outside the box, we'll always be stuck with whatever is put in it for us. Not that I'll use Invisible Glass on my shield ( I might. It's already messed up ) just sayin.
