Jesse James sure made some cool stuff over the years, but people tends to think it's made of gold
Not too impressed by the man himself, but he sure as hell made some great designs over the years
I'm not cloning his Spade Cover, just nicking some of the ideas and trying to improve them a bit

Would filter foam be an option?

Most modern carbs don't like foam filters without some advanced adjustments. If you get too little intake area on there the slide will lift slowly and it won't be able to top out. Less area to breathe through reduces volume of flow. If the volume is below what the engine can consume you will be creating a vacuum inside the filter. The CV carb is tuned for a particular range of pressure differential with the atmosphere. A restricted or wide open intake shifts that range out of the range of pressure the carb is set up for. The air jet, slide lift hole, and slide spring all start to be critical when you go there.

Thanks for the answers, but I'm looking for a smaller one to fit into a homemade cover. Just the filter not bigger than 4"? https://www.denniskirk.com/ace-of-spades-air-cleaner-kit.p184067.prd/184067.sku

I think restriction will have more to do with it than the size..A velocity stack with a piece of screen in it is really small but delivers plenty of air..but lousy filtration...I think you could cut down a k&n to the size you want and be ok..........

That's because it's "another stellar product designed and handcrafted by Jesse James"
