And to add to what Curt said if you fill the tank with motor hot and then not ride far before shutting it down in warmer summer temp leaving bike in the sun the heat from sun and motor combined can heat fuel in tank enough to expand and come pouring out the now veneted fuel cap too.
But i still cant belive all the time ,hastle ,and some money too thats put into going pumpless when if a stock f-pump does happen to fail in the fld can be changed in litterally 10-15 mins max if you carry a spare pump , then your done with it for another 40-50k miles 6-8+ yrs,no fuss no muss.
And many people have gotton many yrs & miles out of stock pump so chances of having more then 1 pump fail durring the time you own the bike are slim to none,thats for sure.
So if the stock when/if the stock pump fails it take all of 15mins to replace pump and $120 to store a new spare light wt small size stock pump in your bags so your good to go if need be.
And i read post after post here in RSC where i see it takes a lot more time and hastle going pumpless going into
carb for needle & seat replacement & float lvl adj not counting the money involved to do the full going pumless mod thats been posted here at times too for new larger needle & seat,hi flow pingle valve,fuel line,fuel filter,venting the fuel cap so you now run risk of fuel spiiling out of tank if bike goes down and or if you fill tank too high and fuel expands on warmer day spewing raw fuel out all over the bike and hot engine post shutdown almost like carb puke.
And when going pumpless with a new hi flow pingle petcock can come close to or = to the $120 it costs me for a new spare to keep on baord just in case pump does fail someday.
My bike is 8+ yrs old with 22k miles and stock original pump is still just fine,a friends 07 R* has 75-80k miles on it with stock original pump thats still on it,other friends 05 R* with 50K+ miles still has stock original pump running fine too,but his clutch spring gave up and was slipping end of the 2013 riding season,thats another subject for another day.
So thats 3 diff R*'s i have 1st hand riding exp with having a collective total of 150k miles & 24 yrs of age without 1 of all 3 bikes having 1 single f-pump fail to date.
See my point esp when you consider reloactiong the pump under the sideocver takes care of many issues people complain about with pump in sotck location not to mention the fact i stated above with 150k miles & 24 yrs age collectovely on 3 r*s without 1 sinlge f-pump failure to date.
Back to going pumpless subject ,I realize some guys get away without going for the pricey hi flow pingle petcock when going pumpless in ligh load situations but i would want a hi flow pingle petcock because i almost always ride 2 up with bags loaded in areas of long steep mountain grades and or hills sometimes at higher speed on interstate too loading the motor a lot more requring good steady constant fuel flow/delivery that stock petcock may not be up to supplying which happened to some guys.
In those situations i have to get into the throttle pretty hard (3/4 ) for long periods going many miles up steep moutain grades and pumpless mod could fall short on fuel delivery under such heavy load going many miles up steep grades with stock fuel petcock that has little less flow capability them the hi flow pingle petcock does.
And for those looking for better cooling ,a cleaner look,or overhetaed carb & fuel line as reasons to go pumpless,the stock pump can be relocated under sidecover for better cooling stopping carb puke in any cases & being out of sight for cleaner look too.
But for me I will take spending 15 mins to replace the pump if/when it fails in 6-8-10 yrs of riding my current R* & $120 for the spare pump anyday after seeing/reading here in RSC for yrs now the 25-30+ page posts i see at times it takes over mult days in a row to get some guys bikes/motors running right again post going punmpless with many people removong perfectly good working pumps that hadnt failed to go pumpless for reasons you can correct by relocating the pump under the sidecover.
And again,thats all being done for something that may not ever happen and if it does only takes 15 mins to fix when you cary a spare pump thats very light wt and pretty darn small & NP to carry on board.(I bet the stock pump would even fit under the seat if you dont have any bags to store it in.)
