I'm in a dill of a pickle 2 Years, 9 Months ago

Was doing my first oil change on the bike after being very leery about it for the last few years. But with the post here open on my iPad, I went out and tackled it. Things were going well, got the plugs out and cleaned. Filter was a little too snug from the last place that changed it but I got it off. Replaced the crush washers while it drained and put the bolts back in. Wanting to be professional about it, I grabbed my Canadian Tire torque wrench and looked up the correct number. The tech tip said 31 ft/lb and my Clymer book said 32 ft/lb. I dialled in to 31 ft/lb and went to torque the oil tank bolt.... That's where things went horribly wrong not sure exactly what happened, the bolt gets tight but the second I try and torque it, it must jump the threads or something because it goes loose again.... And slowly leaks oil.
I'm wishing I torqued them before I put the oil back in but it was such a beautiful day I wanted to get back out on the road... Now she's grounded as I'm afraid of the bolt popping out. Can I rethread the oil pan? I'm pretty sure it's aluminum right? Help help help

The Time-Sert is your best option however those rubber plugs work well also and are the quickest way to get going again. Whatever you do don't use one of those oversize thread cutting plugs, they'll make it harder to fix correctly later.
With a new crush washer you just tighten it until you feel the washer collapse then just a tad more. Stay away from the torque wrenches.

I wouldn't suggest using a torque wrench on an oil plug ever. Three kinds of tight: 1st not tight enough, 2nd tight its just right, 3rd to tight its broke
You can get the hole rethreaded and you will have to get a tad bit bigger drain plug. the key is when you thread it, make sure it is perfectly straight because it is easy to thread it at a small angle. Then you will have a bigger problem.
Here is an oil pan rethread kit. It's $145 but it is worth it!
