Could it really go from "running great, 80 mph on the interstate), to stuck valves - twice in the same day?

That would not be consistient with a stuck solenoid. They lift the exhaust valve closest to the exhaust port on each cylinder. He could have gotten lost in the scope. I've done that many times in aircraft engines, but then I got used to the fact that exhaust valves are normally the big ones!

Ordered the new battery this morning, as a start. Needed that anyway. After it arrives, will test the decompression solenoid and go from there. New ones, if I have to go that route, are $260 , and I had no luck finding an aftermarket listing for it. If I have to buy one, anyone have a suggestion for a less pricey replacement?

I appreciate the helpful input, and if anyone has another idea on the subject, feel free to chime in!

Several people have taken theirs apart as much as they could, and cleaned and lubed them. Once again, hopefully they'll chime in. Weekends (and mondays)can be kinda slow, because a lot of the members are out and about.
I think Docshadow got by for quite a while, just working it by hand.

Have you done some searches on the forum(in the blue bar above on the right side) for "decompression solenoid sticking", to see what comes up?

Stadium Yamaha has it listed for $185. Might be possible to take it apart and clean it.

As long as the housing is not roll-stamped together, it's pretty easy to take a solenoid apart. If I was sure that was the problem, I'd be taking mine apart and trying to clean it. It's on the bottom of the bike, and under a cover so it's not exactly an attention getter, until it does not work!

Most of what I remember reading here, involved lubricant spray, some cleaning and a good portion of hope. There were a surprising number of successes though. Every time this comes up, I keep telling myself I'm gonna familiarize myself with the little bugger, just in case It's actually easy to see and get to. I need to take a pic to put in the PB reference file.

Getting ready to make some new battery cables. They need to be 4 ga., right? Anyone know the length?
Thanks!

4gauge is the size choice. As far as length, just duplicate the old ones.

Well yeah - but the bike isn't where I am, and the old cables aren't off yet. Would like to get cable today, thought I read somewhere that 4 ft. was enough.
