cast wheels on a pre 2004 Roadstar 12 Years, 11 Months ago
Hello all, I am new here but not new to riding or forums. I have a question regarding the mounting of the cast wheels as found on a 2004 roadstar on a 2001 roadstar. I used the search function to see if this topic had previously been posted but was unable to find a thread on it. So here is my question:

I have heard it can be done but requires a bearing or spacer change. Can anyone here provide me with this info? I have already purchased my cast wheels, they are on the way and I hope to be able to mount them soon.

Thanks

Welcome!

I put cast wheels on my 99 last year.

As I recall, you must use the right rear (rotor side) spacer from the newer cast wheel mounting.

For some reason, it's OD is a little smaller and the pre-04 spacer will not fit into the dust seal of the rear cast wheel.

If you can't get the spacer, it may be possible to use the pre-04 spacer and buy a pre-04 dust seal, replacing the post-04 seal; as an alternative.

But, this assumes the OD of the two different dust seals are the same. I'm not sure.

Bucardo, thanks for the reply. I checking all of the varous roadstar forums, this is the first "first hand" information I was able to get that was clear. From reading the other posts it appeared that the spacer (actually called a collar on the yamaha parts list - part #30) was the one part that needed to be replaced. Thanks again

Bucardo, were their any issues with the left side of the rear wheel. There is so much conflicting info out here its hard to determine what is truth. I am being told there is also a spacer change required where the cush drive meets the wheel.

Once I get these wheels on I will be putting together a "how to" for this project so the nest poor soul does not have to weed through all the questions.

Nothing other than the rotor side collar. I checked with Jimaray, who has done it on other bikes recently and he confirmed.

You should be good to go!

Re:cast wheels on a pre 2004 Roadstar 12 Years, 11 Months ago
I installed 04 wheels on my 99 this winter, there are two bearings in the cush drive hub the big bearing needs to be changed not the needle bearing, use all 04 collars see list below, Some guys talked about a different spacer for the rotor side, i used my 99 ones and the wheel turns smoothly and the belt aligns centre, I didn't notice any difference between the spacers other than the top diameter to cover more of the oil seal.

Here's a list of part numbers & prices of the wheels, bearings, spacers, & related parts............please note that these prices are A-1 prices they may have increased since this list was made, but it'll get you in the ball park as far as pricing goes:

Go to www.yamaha-motor.com and print the 04 and 99 wheel diagrams with the parts numbers , I found it helped me see exactly which parts fit together, however be aware the 04 diagram is misleading as some of the bearings are not shown on the correct side of the wheel as installed.

Hope this helps.<br><br>Post edited by: Motostar, at: 2005/03/28 20:59

Thanks to you both for the help. my wheels arrived yesterday. The arrived with bearing, spacers and seals intact through the wheel and cush drive. Looks like the only thing I need is the right side collar.

Thanks again

Those posts are over 6 years old. But to answer your question you usually can find them on Ebay or sometimes here from an individual. Unless of course you want to go to the dealer and order all the individusl pieces which would set you back quite a bit.
