It's my understanding that it will run rich especially iof you haven't rejetted for the changes (hyper charger & pipes). I'm sure the guru's will ask about the jetting among a bunch of other things.

Is the carb stock? Is it jetted? How long have you had the charger?Did this just start? Have you checked the plugs?

You can't just hang a Hypercharger or any other open air filter on your bike and not rejet it. The pipes you can get away with most of the time. Didn't you get a jet kit with HC?

black smoke is an overly rich fuel mix. the hypercharger install kit does include new carb jetting parts but not a PMS screw.

you should pop off the cover cap over the stock PMS screw and start there.

does it only puff black when your taking off? or while running?
you probably have an overly rich low circuit, if you did everything else correctly.

"Rich" is a relative term. Bikes usually run richer than ideal air/fuel ratios which is 14.7:1. However, there is a point where being too rich serves no purpose, other than wastes gas, fouls spark plugs, adds excessive carbon and can also rob power.

Each carb ckt requires a certain level of richness to provide that needed element for that particular ckt, whether it be to provide max Tq and or Hp, or to aid in cooling the cylinder heads and prevent detonation at WOT.

These bikes are well capable to give you 40 to 50mpg on a good solid cruise (65mph) dependent on how the carb is tuned. There is a safe spread in air/fuel ratios in tuning, tune for performance, tune for economy, or somewhere in between.
