Re:Loud knocking sound 5 Years, 11 Months ago
Glad this topic came up. Mine has been making a loud "CLANK" over even the smallest bumps. Been suspecting the upper belt guard for some time. Removed it this afternoon and I can't believe the difference in sound when cruising. That damn thing squawked, clanked and rattled so much I can't believe I waited this long to correct it.

Starman, hoping yours is as simple to fix. Don't let Curt scare you with his predictions.

+1. I ended removing it since the belt is now covered by the bags.

Mine banged for months before I too removed the chrome belt guard. I tried tape, felt, removing rubber. I settled on the guard... problem gone.

It is more like a knocking sound, almost like if you dropped a wrench on the fender. Sounds like it is coming from below the seat. I am going to try the bolt tip. I checked the sub frame, no cracks.

I had the same problem awhile back, tightened the shit out of the fender bolt, solved it!

I've had this same issue. Definitely separate from the belt guard noise, which I removed a while back. If I hit a sharp bump at freeway speeds, something somewhere goes CLANK! Metallic sound.

I've been worried about a broken shock mount, and we'll find out when the new shock arrives next week.

The belt guard is a different sound. I noticed you could twist the guard with your hand. Twisting counter clockwise I could make it hit the swing arm with little effort. After getting my 1st replacement back tire I noticed it was gone. 3nd back tire it was back. In my case there is a small sweet spot you can adjust from side to side. I think the rubber dampener has alot to do with it!

Bingo, I will wait for your reply. "metallic sound" is a good way to describe it!

check the sub frame under the fender for broken welds and cracks in the frame itself.

Figured I'd update with my total lack of progress on this issue:

I've got mine down this far in pursuit of my other projects and I can't find anything that seems loose, broken, or wonky. Also replaced the rear shock and had the whole assembly off.

Any clank that's so loud over freeway traffic that it makes you wince should be easy to find, or so I thought. Yes, belt guard has been off for years. I'm at a loss. If I find it I'll pass it on.
