OIl leak at stator grommet 8 Years, 1 Month ago
I finally found the source of my oil leak. It is the rubber wire grommet at the stator/generator.I don't want to take it all apart to repair it. I am thinking of laying the bike on it's left side and drying up the oily grommet then injecting sealant via a syringe into the crease of the grommet.Do any of you have a better idea? It's too cold in my shop to really spend a bunch of time fixing it.

Make sure you empty the gas tank first, but really do you want to lay your bike down? Why not drain the oil first and then repair the leak?A small heater will keep you warm while you repair the bike.Good luck..JYD

I just put in new Amsoil thinking the leak was the plug. I am not sure I can keep the oil clean.$40 bucks wasted if I can't and I can lay it over using a hoist and a ton of padding. The real question is "is there a better easier way to stop the leak?" It should be warm tomorrow +10 or so inside.

Well if you can inject the selant into the grommet you may be ok, give it a shot, but I don't think you will ever get the oil out of the groove. If you decide to remove the cover to do it, leave the bike on the side stand and you won't loose more than about a 1/2 pint of oil..your choice... Check the tech articles under stator replacement and they give a good explanation of how to get inside there....

Yea, its what flashblack said. I removed my stator cover to replace stock with upgrade, had a pan ready and only lost about 1/2 pint.

Thanks to all. I have read all the stuff I can find.I think I will simply do it right and take it apart and reseal the grommets. No biggie since the loss of oil is so small. I just finished doing the flip and grind to lower it. I also just installed new front wheel bearings.I'll be ready when the snow and ice melt in June. G'nite all

Yes, I fixed it with ease. A magnified look at the rubber grommet showed that the oil was seeping past the wires and past the grommet itself. I used a new gasket and orange silcone gasket maker and made sure that the gasket maker was pressed into the rubber grommet and that the grommet was sealed in the case.I am kinda anal about cleaning the surfaces of any old oil so that I get a perfect seal the first time.

I am now simply overjoyed!!!! I bought a Honda Goldwing Saturday as a project bike. It needs starter system work but includes a trailer and is in very good condition for, get this, $500.00. I tested the starter today and it does work so the problem is in the electrical. This is my weak area butI'll get it! Maybe, the wife will get the R* not!

Good luck,
Mike
