Hey Loren, glad to hear the bike's not that bad off. The Memphis Shades batwing is still yours if you want it. [Don't worry about the cost.] It's just a matter of getting it to you. I'd like to get up to my friend's place in Philo with in the next month of at all possible, I'd be glad to bring it with me if you can get down that way to pick it up. Let me know.

As long as you don't have one or two dents on the front of your bike's gas tank, chances are your insurance company won't declare it a total loss. On my 650 Classic and my first R*, I had the above mentioned damage (relatively lightly on the R*). The adjuster told me that said damage was caused by the triple tree slamming from one side to the other, and that it indicated frame damage, therefore the decision to declare it a total loss. It is damage like this that is the cause of so many salvage titles.
I'm 'recovering ' from my own mishap, although a lot less serious than yours. Basically it boils down to stalling the inadequately warmed up bike after backing it on a dark circular driveway. It was in a low spot, and the bike just rolled over to the left. I put my arm out to stop my fall, and tore or pulled something in my upper left arm that makes raising it to 90 degrees painful. Not anywhere near your league of pain and injury, but then again, I'm going to be eligable for Medicare later this year, and only have feline companions at home. You are very lucky to have someone like Toby looking after you!(You can tell him I said that, too! )

Darn it, the dent on the tank is right where you describe. we looked at the pics and I saw the 'death knell' staring right there at me. *sniffle*
My poor babygirl 'broke her neck'.

we still have toby's bike. his is paid off too.
I guess if they total it there will be an almost new FI 1700 engine etc available for the cost of the salvage title. I probably wont buy it back as salvage for myself.
I will also have an ed big tour avaiable, it is the ed cover on stock pan. it wasnt on the bike when it went down, and the slip cover with fringe can be slipped off of it, leaving just the nice ed big tour plain black leather covering, and other misc R* parts too.

in other news I am Still mending. they let me shower today and let toby be the one to wash me.
they figured out part of my white count issue and addressed that, and I am getting a light sleeping pill for nighttime so I dont wind up being exhausted like yesterday.

you take care of that arm, get it checked, could be a ligament or something. toby did his left shoulder in a few weeks ago, and has to take it easy.
shiny side up ppl and wear your gear please.

Hi Loren, thx forupdate on your bike. It,s hard to go thru accepting the loss of your machine you have put so much trust in over the years you,ve had ir. And you did a nice job outfitting your bike for you, by your pictures. I went thru the same scenario with my 2000 Road Star standard in 2004. Mine was definitely not as classy looking as yours, standard black but it was my bike bought and paid for new in 2000, had 30,000 miles on when i crashed into the right rear corner of a car ahead of me on a main street in Scottsdale, who was dutifully stopping for a red light with 2 cars ahead of him. ( i got the ticket for undue care and attention, which was fair ball). The damage to my R* was exactly the same as yours sounds. 5" vertical dent in left front of gas tank, front tip of front fender dinged, left floorboard mount and shifter bent considerably( from taking main impact of bike hitting the car bumper). The Yam dealer i bought it at would not rebuild with new parts, as my insurance co. offered because their liability for possible frame damage. They quoted how much to strip the frame bare and send it out for x-ray for cracks, would cost much more than just buy new frame, front fender, gas tank, floorboard and mount , shift assembly, etc. so my ins paid for them to strip my old frame and build into new frame, at that time (2004) new frame was $700. and change, plus the other new parts, - my deductible of course. I was happy, basically got a new bike with 30,000 miles on it, but miles i knew. Talked to the Yamaha mechanic doing the swap , he said visually there was no stress marks or torque marks on my old frame so i asked him to keep all the old parts for me which i still have today, visions of doing a raked chop, never done so far. Reason i,m telling this is it sounded to me from your description of damage that your ins co. may rebuild with anew frame, with your urging and presuming you would want to do that as opposed to write it off and pickup new bike. Then again ins policy standards you will have to deal with may not allow, someone along the line will not stand for liability they are extremely touchy about nowadays compared to my deal. Just a thought in case you are really wanting to keep your original machine. You are so positive in your posts, that attitude infects us reading your posts and gives us a lift, thank you and good healing.

Re:Went down hard on fwy 8 Months, 2 Weeks ago
After re-reading your latest posts about how your accident happened, i,m wondering if you maybe experienced a high speed wobble that quickly developed into uncontrollability. I went thru one of those on my same 2000 R* going thru a 70mph 2 lane sweeper, very scary stuff and had no idea how to counteract it. The front tire started shaking uncontrollable, i thought push steer harder into the lean but made it worse, started push steer out of the corner at same time ease off throttle, did not relax wobble at all. By the time i finally was slow enough the wobble quit i had only a foot left to the guard rail. I have since seen a video made by some Brit. motorcycle tire co. filming their testing of induced high speed wobble. The main thing that always worked for the rider to cancel the wobble was to lean down right onto the gas tank!!!! If i remember right they determined the frame starts flexing at high speed and sends the front wheel wobbling, moving the center of gravity of the riders body weight forward and tight to the tank cancelled the frame flex and tire wobble. There have been improvements to frames and add on things since early 2000,s to thwart this so hopefully that was not what you experienced.

Glad to see your healing continues to be positive! As for the question to ride or not, that is a decision that can wait as long as it needs to. It's not pertinent to the now. Just focus on getting healthy and enjoying your loved ones!

Take care and continued wishes for a full and speedy recovery!
