50 members on now.
If everyone thought it was worth $20 a year that would be a grand.

If a grand could save the site I believe that would have happened by now.

And don't forget we have 50 guests on right now.
People that find this information interesting enough to be here, but not enough to join for free.

(And there is nothing wrong with that at all. I always said you could find everything you ever wanted to know about a Roadstar without ever asking as single question here. It has all been covered, just do the searching here on the forum.)

And if we go to the paid site, would these guest be excluded?
Would they be able to read the posts by not see the pictures?

Or would the paid members and guests see the same thing?

(Just sell the DVD... )

It would be nice to not have everything open to the public. I'd toss in $20-$40 a year CDN if I can pay via online payment system and not PayPal. I subscribe to Consumer Reports for 20 USD a year and a digital subscription to Motorcycle Mojo magazine.

You guys are missing the point. It’s not about dollars,. It’s mostly about manpower and software.

That's true, but some only want the forum to exist as-is & that's not going to happen.
I have another thread discussing the technical aspects of the database & other issues behind the forum.

~

My thoughts about a paid subscription would be in the $10 to $20 a year range for full access.
Free, you can read & search with only a general section available to post questions. No picture hosting for free users.

Even paid wouldn't have free unlimited picture hosting to prevent people from taking advantage of it for non-forum pic hosting.
Many forums also limit the number of archived & saved messages as well as a fixed amount of storage space on the forum's servers.

I think with the right content available on the paid version (with teasers on the free site) there would be an incentive to at least try a 1 time paid membership.
I'm sure there are also people who would be resistant to $1/lifetime just based on principal.

Sure, there is free content of all kinds on the web, but even the free 'adult' sites have a paid subscriber base & embedded advertising to pay for the free stuff.
I also think that any merchandise should be forum produced and sold, as opposed to anyone who wants to make stuff selling it.
That would require copyright or licensing of the name & logo to prevent piracy.

As far as a DVD, I'd think that's only possible for the tech section.
The forum database file itself must be larger than the 4GB a DVD would hold, not counting a single picture.

I would go as high as $100 a year, but to be fair, that's because I have only had my R* for a little less than 2 years and still have a LOT to learn, and these guys are great teachers! I understand that pricing / value is different for everyone.

If it comes to that, different levels of membership to control area access:

Free: read general areas
basic: read / post general, read / post in most areas, read tech area.
Full: read / post general, read / post in most areas, read tech area, read / post classifieds

or something like that. Just some way to generate enough $ to fully fund the site. Prices could go down if funding needs are being met... just a thought

Several people have already offered cash to support the forum.
How much are those willing to offer to keep the forum going?

IMHO there should ALWAYS be free content offered since that's always been the spirit of this place.
Depending on the software platform used, there could possibly be different levels of content available for different 'subscription levels'.
Maybe a tiered level structure, it works for a lot of web based content - not just forums.

If not actually contributing money, maybe how much embedded advertising are you willing to put up with?

Let's toss some ideas around - any & all. Go!
BubbaKahuna, What would we be looking at $ wise to be able to follow thru with what Gram is offering? How many hours would it require to do the needed work to continue? Is it possible to start from scratch and not have to convert the forum info to the new options for hosting or is converting from what Gram has been using the only way to keep the content? Would be ok with monetary help but am not sure if there is anything a web pecker like me could do to help with the tech side of things. How many people with knowledge would it take to keep the forum running without it turning into a job? And what kind of monetary input would it take to cover the continued upkeep and operation. I enjoy the forum but have no idea what kind of time and money it takes to keep up and running. Any help I could give with limited knowledge? Also would be OK with purchase of a CD if that is a possibility, maybe a good way for Gram to recoup some of his time and money if nobody picks up the burden. If you can answer some of these questions it might help those of us who have no idea what it takes to do what needs to be done.
