HELP! how to remove bolt??? 1 Year, 2 Months ago
|
|
Ok guys, I need a little help, even though I'm sure nothing like this has ever happened to any of you before
I am removing my floorboards to put on my FWD controls. 3 out of the 4 button head bolts where stripped out.(2 bolts per side) I have drilled and easy outed the first 2. I am drilling with a smaller drill first, then a 1/4 drill.
On the last one, my small drill broke off inside of the bolt with none of it sticking out. I tried to drill out what had been done with the 1/4 drill to see if I could get the easy out to work but it isn't deep enough. Being a button head bolt there is not much to grab a hold of with a set of vice grips. and with the bolt heads being inside of the floorboard bracket like they are, there is limited space to work with.

What if you got a die grinder and ground the whole head off, pulled the floorboard, and then used vice grips on the remaining bolt?

How about trying a cold chisel and break the head off

Cike, Can you turn the mount in the direction the bolt would loosen to see if the bolt will get loose, maybe finish turning with a chisel and a hammer.Ride on, Mike.

well the situation has changed a little bit.
I tried putting my next larger size easy out in the hole to see if I could get it to grab.
I ended up breaking the head of the bolt off.
so the bracket came off. leaving a little piece of the bolt sticking out. Sounds good so far right?
the problem now is that this little piece of bolt sticking out has a 1/4 hole through the middle of it, so when I try to put vice grips on it, it tapers down and the grips slide off. The piece of broken drill is still on the inside too.
any new ideas??
If this shit was easy, everyone would be doing it right?

my smallest pipe wrench wont grab it either.
if I could figure out how to get that drill tip out of there I could finish drilling through it and still use the easy out.

just thinking out loud, (sorta)
only think I can think of at this point is to use a die grinder to grind out the center of the bolt (and the drill tip) problem is that I don't know how much of the drill is in there, and i'm not sure if I can get die grinder tips that are small enough.

depending on how mangled the end of the bolt is I would try putting a slot that my big flat blade screw driver will fit in. I have a cutoff wheel on a angle grinder that does a good job. I don't know if a hacksaw will fit in there, but that would also work. I would also use heat to loosen up the lock tight.
