Fuel gauge accuracy worsening 2 Weeks, 5 Days ago
For some time now, the accuracy of my fuel gauge has been getting progressively worse. When I got the bike, if you filled it up to the cutout on the filler neck, the first gallon used would barely register on the gauge. Then eventually, the first gallon began to register a 3/4 tank left, and over time it was more like a 1/2 tank left. And now, when the gauge reads empty, there's still half a tank left.

I know the level sensors are known to fail on these bikes. Is this how they fail, gradually over time, or is this inaccurate reading something that can be corrected without replacing the sending unit? And if so, how?

Thanks.

go to an electronics store and get a Potentiometer that will do 150 Ohms at least. plug base and sweep into green meter cable.

@ 140 Ohms it should read full, 0 Ohms empty, 72 Ohms half, etc. Just remember that it will have to sit for about 5 min for an accurate indication. For the $2 investment (if you have a multimeter) you can find out if its the sender or the gauge system thats causing the problem.

I agree its probably the sender, either a bad connection (connector or internal to sender) or the float is binding.

Thanks for the links Mort, I get lazy sometimes and forget to search the site... And you're right, will be a real shame if we can't save and archive it all. I'm still waiting to hear back from archive.org about that.

As for my fuel gauge, I'll give those few suggestions a try... Fingers crossed.

I have also noticed a loss of accuracy in mine this past season. Getting the light with 2 gallons left now.

I don't really trust mine to be accurate. I use the petcock method. When I switch to reserve, I look for fuel. I know that won't work for the newer fuel injected bikes. If I had one of those, I would set an arbitrary mileage number and then look for fuel when I hit that.

Mine works perfectly, it reads empty at all times
I wait for a slight lurch, hit reserve and look for a station.
Like Joe said, this doesn't help you injected guys but your trip meter can be a friend !
