Problems with turn over 7 Years, 1 Month ago

I am new to the site and have a new (used R* 1999 w/34K on it0. When I got the bike form the guy it was a t a dealer and it would start. Had been sitting for a few weeks and the service guy tried to get it started. It woould not turn over. He did the usual (battery, decompression solenoid blah blah blah) and replaced the battery and decided that the cylinder was full of gas due to stuck needle in carb. cleared the cylinder and it started finally. I road it home and stopped several times for an hour at a time and everything was fine. Next morning I go out to start and the same thing is happenign. Is it really the cylinder filling with gas and not able to turn? I checked the decompression solenoid and don't know if when it is actuated is it supposed to hit the spoon and release after it fires only or hit the spoon once and then release during the firing as it now does? Should I tear into the carb and hope for the best? How do I clear the cylinder of any execess gas? I did the battery form the car trick and got the same turn over rate on the bike (1 tinr over every five of 8 seconds) so it is not the battery. Anybody have any suggestions for me on what to look for or do on this beasty? Thanks for any help you guys may have.

Lifeguard, if I haven't already welcomed you to the clinic, then, welcome to the clinic, sounds like you have a bit of a dilema on your hands, but, it is questions like this that brings the braniacs out of the wood work to pounce on the conundrum at hand, soon you will be cranken the bitch with the best of them.

You can't compress a liquid (gasoline), if it starts to turn over and stops, pull a plug from each cylinder, if it turns over fuel will come spraying out. If this is happens then the float and needle in the carb need work. Try turning the fuel off when not running bike, does the problem go away?? Be sure to keep an eye on the condition of the oil, too much fuel in the cylinders will get past the pistons and into the oil. Good luck

The decompression solenoid will engage the spoon and depending on the position of the cams might only depress it partway. As the cams roll over the spoon will be depressed the rest of the way until the engine starts.
If it is releasing while the engine is cranking that would indicate a loss of voltage needed to keep the solenoid engaged.
Since the fuel pump won't allow fuel to flow when off I would think it would be hard for the cylinders to fill with fuel. Besides, a cylinder full of fuel would cause a hard stop and the engine wouldn't crank at all. You can check though by pulling the 2 left side plugs and cranking the engine.
Even though the dealer installed a new battery it's still possible for there to be a loose connection somewhere which would cause a loss of current even with a car battery hooked up. An easy way to test for this is to check the battery voltage while cranking and then check the voltage at the starter terminal while cranking. A large voltage difference between the 2 readings would indicate a loose connection or possibly a bad relay.
If the dealer replaced the battery with one off the shelf it's possible that it had set there long enough that it wasn't fully charged. The battery, after sitting 30 minutes, should have a voltage reading of 12.8 or better.

Clean up all the cable connections, to battery, starter relay,etc. Even with a jump, if they are loose or corroded you won't get power.

If this happened the morning after you purchashed it, I would be calling the dealer and letting him know the address to pick it up at so they can fix it properly. If the problem existed when they had it they should be responsible for the repair.

if your gonna pull the plugs and turn it over be sure to tape off the ends of the plug wires if their is fule in the jugs and you get a spark it won't be pretty
